'Bama Oddities

The University of Alabama football team has churned out some of the oddest stories and personalities in the last couple years. To name a few:

  • Coach Nick Saban, of the infamous "'I'm not going to be the Alabama coach" promise, comes to Tuscaloosa under the banner of CFB's biggest coaching contract. He quickly becomes the most hated and detested coach in America, especially in Florida and Louisiana.
  • Starting linebacker Jimmy Johns was arrested in 2007 after becoming the SEC's version of Tony Montana. The classicly named Johns sold cocaine "pretty openly" all over campus and raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars in proceeds.
  • Three year starting quarterback John Parker Wilson brings back man bangs (down South, did they ever leave?) after a supporting role in MTV's Two-A-Days. Although a successful NFL career may not be in the cards, he will always be a superstar in Alabama and salons everywhere.
  • Rivalry-large_medium

And now comes Julio Jones, freshmen All American wide receiver, and a University of Alabama Student Senator. I found this article while reading Dr. Saturday, who highlighted the write-in election of Jones to the school senate. Although I'm not here to poach on the legacy of the king, I do have to mention one particularly interesting statement by SMQ Dr. Saturday...

...like Sherman, Jones emerged from obscurity to torch most of an overmatched South as a true freshman...

The torching reference? Brilliant. Emerging from obscurity? Not so brilliant. Jones was the #2 ranked recruit in the monster 2007 recruiting class, a 5 Star recruit who was compared to Terrell Owens. Anyways, now that God will strike me down for calling out Dr. Saturday, at least I went out with a post about man bangs, cocaine, and Tony Montana.

Bama’s great offensive lineman made the million dollar pre draft mistake of channeling the lazy spirits of Tony Mandarich and Mike Williams…
