Congratulations, Michigan State
Today, two undefeated teams with juggernaut running games faced off in East Lansing. With ties abolished as of 1994 reckoning, someone had to lose.
That someone was my favorite team.
Unlike other Wisconsin fans, I'm not angry about this loss. We got robbed JUST ONE TIME, but we didn't play all that well today. MSU leaves home with a win, and its a win I feel they had to work for. They had to have it more than us today.
People, you can be mad at me for accepting this, or you can read the rest of what I have to say. I am NOT angry about this loss. I lived through 2008 (where Bielema gave the game away). I've seen more than my share of Wisconsin losses, and this one emotionally aches, but not nearly as much as the 2008 loss to Ohio State, the 2005 loss to Northwestern, the 93 loss to Minnesota or the 1999 loss to Michigan. It hurts. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wisconsin-hating media dropped us out of the polls entirely.
But this loss is not one that makes me ashamed of my team. The 2007 and 2008 losses to Penn State...were a humiliation. This loss was not so much a humiliation as a game that got away from us on a long TD return by Keshawn Martin. It got away from us when the officials ruled that Mark Dell made the catch (for the record, I maintain he SO did not, whether that is erroneous or truthful I don't care). It got away from us when MSU's blitzers raced through the interior gaps and tackled John Clay for a 4 yard loss on 3rd and 1. Bottom line: we got outplayed today. We lost. But we didn't lose a battle that would have turned this ten point game into a rout: turnovers. We didn't play awful, we just didn't play good, and that hurt up front.
The 98 and 99 Badger teams suffered horrible losses to Michigan. But they didn't give up. They could have, but they didn't. They persevered and won the conference both times, winning the ensuing Rose Bowls. The Badgers HAVE to bounce back from this game. They have the personnel to do it. Whether they have the will is another question.
As nice as an undefeated season would have been, I think, in the end, that if this Wisconsin team plays up to its potential, they have a real chance to beat Ohio State and win out.
MSU fans, your team WORKED for this one. They worked harder than mine did. Good luck shaking that losing after beating a ranked team bug. Good luck the rest of the way. No one else saw you as title contenders, but if you go coast-to-coast, know that you have impressed me with your work today. But you cannot turn the ball over as you did today and expect a similar result again.
Sincerely signed,
OBrienSchofield*IS*myHero

This Badger team will go as far as Bret Bielema can take them
Today showed that this range is shorter then I previously thought.
As long as Bielema is coach, I think the Cats will always have a fighting chance against the Badgers. And I think they will struggle against the MSUs and Iowas.
But at least they are 67 points better than Austin Peay.
Todays loss wasnt about a lack of talent or errors made by the players,
it was poor personnel decisions on offense and getting outcoached on defense. It’s hurts to lose a game bc of a lack talent, but it hurts way more to lose bc of an inability to put that talent in the right situations.

Hmmm. Something's wrong there...
As long as Bielema is coach, I think the Cats will always have a fighting chance against the Badgers
As long as Bielema is coach, I think the Cats will always have a fighting chance against the Badgers in Ryan Field.
Fixed.

Doubtful.
The home team hasn’t lost the series since 2000. This team is insane at home and “meh” on the road.

Well, yeah
Except for the fact that the teams didn’t play in 2001, 2002, 2007, and 2008, that might be persuasive. The Badgers have won two straight in Madison (only one in which the Cats didn’t have a “fighting chance”). Not much of a trend.
My comment stands.
I'll be at that game
so you guys are doomed mwahahah!
Badgers have never lost when I’ve been at Camp Randall. Ever.

Thanks.
This wasn’t a ton of fun to write, but I had to do it. I doubt anyone else would in my place, and I wanted to forestall any possible gloating…

Very magnanimous, OB

It had to be done.
It just had to. No Wisconsin writers on OTE.
And NC State lost. At home. BLEEP.

wisky thoughts
MSU is tougher than anyone figured (except me, who predicted 9-3, /pats self on back). And by tough, I mean, spit nails and chew gravel tough.
Also, the Wisconsin receivers were out of sync and Tolzien continued to struggle with sideline throws.

Nick Toon was TERRIBLE today.
He dropped 3 receptions, and I’m glad Scott Tolzien didn’t go all Drew Tate on him and whack him upside the head…

Nope.
They drop the men’s basketball team out of the polls at the first opportunity after an NCAA appearance (or a win over Duke), drop the football team out of the polls entirely for a 2 point road loss against a team we’ve never had a lot of success on their home field (Northwestern). The hockey teams are national contenders, the women’s basketball team is rather middling, and the volleyball team (along with everyone else’s) gets flattened on an annual basis by Penn State (although one of the most competitive matches on the Big Ten Network ALMOST had the Lady Badgers take a set).
We’re not nearly the media darlings Michigan and Nebraska are. If we lose, we drop like a stone in the rankings. Its disgusting and I absolutely hate it, but it happens on an annual basis.

I'm really confused with where you are going here.
Bo Ryan is a great coach and UW has been a strong program for his entire tenure (3 B10 titles) however, the Badgers have rarely made it past the first weekend in the NCAA’s (6 out of 9 years) and have yet to make a Final Four under Ryan. National media tends to remember NCAA performance (perhaps disproportionately), so it’s not surprising that they might not get the “love” you feel they deserve. They have been ranked number one in this decade.
We in the Big Ten are aware of Northwestern’s success, as well as how difficult a team they can be to play. Again though, to the National media Northwestern is a team that hasn’t won a bowl game since 1948. Losing to them will probably been taken worse than it deserves. (See 5-0 NU unranked AP, 25 Coaches).
The rest of the stuff is where you lose me. Hockey team ranked, the non revenue sports …is that “proof” that you don’t get national attention you deserve or that the 5 people who follow those sports (hockey excepted) give you the respect you deserve?
Bottom line is that winning on a national stage, something that Wisconsin has not done, cures all “disrespect” issues.
The other sports get a lot of respect
but that respect doesn’t translate to the football team at all.
And it seems like that bad 2007-08 tournament run that was ended by Davidson would have been avoided had Wisconsin gotten the #2 seed. The basketball team has had to perenially struggled for seeding, and even then, we’ve saved our worst games for the tournament. It’s sickening.
2006 may have been an aberration. The bottom only falls out of a season when you’re ranked and finish with a losing conference record (which Wisconsin HAS done in 2001 and 2008). In this case, the bottom’s fallen out now. I mean, our winning percentage in E.L. is terrific (its NOT, both our teams have terrible records in the other’s home field).
My main frustration isn’t the lack of respect so much as the total disgust people have with a loss that really could have been much better AND much worse.
BTW, does this happen on The Only Colors? Or do you know who the diehards are (by diehards, I mean people who live by the Spartan football team and have seen the worst and best it has to offer)? Because I never knew there were so MANY Wisconsin fans until yesterday (sarcasm). Those people contribute so regularly you’d think they were the site’s lifeblood (additional sarcasm).

Sorry if that came across as a rant.
The Spartan football team worked very hard for its win. It wasn’t easy by any means.
