NFL Draft: Big Ten Recap
If you're like me, when NFL draft day comes, you're initially feeling a mixture of excitement and intrigue. Who will the first couple of picks be? What will my pro team do (since I'm a Bears fan, the answer is usually exactly the opposite of what they should do)... and, finally, where will my school's players end up?
So, the first round comes.... your attention is riveted. It's exciting! It's shiny! It's all ESPN will talk about!
And then the second round.... you pay attention a little less. Maybe you perk up if you hear that a "stud" player who fell out of the first round has finally been drafted, or if some completely illogical / blockbuster trade is announced.
The third round arrives... now you're really off doing other things. If you hear your pro team mentioned or your school, you glance at the TV, but, the rest of it... meh...
By the time the 4th through 7th rounds come, you're attitude is most likely somewhere between "Wait... this thing is still going on?? I only turned this channel on to see Baseball Tonight!" and "Wake me up if something exciting happens..."
Well, lucky for you Big 10 fan, we're here to help. Hit the link and scroll on down for a complete recap of which Big 10 players have been drafted, and where they'll be heading. Whether you missed a round, or, well, the entire thing, we've got you covered.
Without further ado, here's your recap....

Shortly after the draft,
Donovan Warren (CB, Michigan) signed a FA contract with the Jets.
"Career highlights? I had two. I got an intentional walk from Sandy Koufax and I got out of a rundown against the Mets." - Bob Uecker
Among others,
Wisconsin signees:
Jeff Stehle (DT) signed with the Broncos
Chris Maragos (S) signed with the 49ers

Also
Blair White (WR) to Colts
Bret Swenson (K) to Colts

woooooooo eeeeee
Blair White is perfect for Indi. He’s heady enough for that passing offense.

John Asamoah is overrated.
Srsly, the way Illinois played last year, I didn’t know they HAD an offensive line…

Just for fun:
Iowa 6 (23, 63, 66, 93, 119, 216)
PSU 5 (28, 51, 95, 164, 214)
Illinois 3 (39, 68, 132)
Northwestern 3 (109, 122, 144)
Indiana 3 (33, 232, 246)
Ohio State 3 (116, 242, 244)
Michigan 2 (13, 150)
Minnesota 2 (87, 157)
Wisconsin 2 (118, 130)
Purdue 1 (56)
MSU 1 (215)
I find it more than a little amusing that Northwestern never has top 150 recruits coming in (I think), but has 3 on the way out.
I have to imagine this information is out there
but I’m way to lazy to try to look it up. Has anybody seen a listing of the college recruiting rankings vs draft position?

The closest thing I could find is
http://www.athlonsports.com/college-football/13422/nfl-stars-how-recruiting-translates-to-the-draft
It depends how you want to read the statistics, but about half of the first 3 rounds come from the top ~350 recruits.
My guess is
A really good chunk of the top tier college recruits get drafted early because as long as they can stay healthy and out of trouble, they usually get lots of playing time and attention at big name schools. The later draft rounds, by contrast, are filled with the guys who maybe weren’t names coming in, but put on a real show in college and made the teams take notice…

That makes sense
at 32 picks per round, all 7 rounds wouldn’t come close to taking the top ~350 recruits, even if that’s all that were taken. At only taking around half…well, a motivated guy, who really took to coaching and excelled in the program clearly wouldn’t have to highly ranked to be highly drafted.
I think so many of the recruiting rankings really focus on pure physical skills by necessity, and while that will certainly give a guy an advantage going forward, most of them aren’t finished developing physically yet, much yet mentally.
Of course, with injuries and like, there is also a certain amount of luck that factors into it.

It boggles the mind
to think that Iowa’s 6th player drafted came before OSU’s 2nd.
Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

It's really just one of those quirks in class strength.
tOSU will likely have more guys taken in the first two rounds next year than the rest of the league combined. Still, it’s fun to revel in it every so often.

Where did you find that Broncos logo?
As a Broncos hater, I’m really hoping they’re changing their logo to that. Tim Tebow will be even more of a joke than he already is, wearing a helmet with that on the side.
I didn't even notice it
what the hell is that thing?

You know
When I was getting the logos I thought that too. I got all the logos for the teams from Wikipedia (we already had the school logos in our own image section) because at least the ones there are publicly available.

I realize this is polite company and all
but doesn’t that logo look like a horse attempting to “pleasure” itself?
That's One of their alternate logos
They’ve had it since the day they switched back in 1997.

stevie brown
Fyi, stevie brown (S/LB) from Michigan was drafted by the raiders the 251st overall pick (5th from last) in the 7th round.
then austin spitler (LB from osu) was taken with the next pick by the ’phins and josh hull (LB from psu) was taken with the second to last pick by the rams.
Good fits - Defense
Brandon Graham to the Iggles is fantastic, IMO. He’s going to a solid organization that coveted him so much that they traded up a few spots to get him.
Navarro Bowman to SF is a steal for the 3rd round. He’ll make a nice compliment to Pat Willis. He was an animal for PSU in 2008.
You know Thaddeus Gibson is going to do well on the Steelers. That’s going to be a terrifying D to run/pass against if they can get their corner situation shored up. I like that fit.
Corey Wooten to the Bears is a GREAT pick. You never have to worry about the Bears D, and if they identify him as one of their top picks on D, you can bet he’s gonna be good.
Odrick to the Fins I really like as well. Fins made some nice offseason moves, and combined with this draft should make the AFC East one of the more competitive divisions in the NFL next year.
