According to Kansas City sports radio, the Big Ten has extended membership offers (actually, it's likely offers to apply for membership) to Nebraska, Missouri, Notre Dame, and Rutgers.

If Notre Dame remains independent, Rutgers would be the 14th team. The Big Ten would then decide whether to stop at 14 or extend offers to two other schools (maybe Pitt and Syracuse?). If Notre Dame joins, sources say an offer will be extended to one other school making it a 16-team league.

As a former resident of Kansas City, I agree with what Jon Miller wrote about the connections of this station and its management. There could well be legs to this.

The truth

must be protected with a bodyguard of lies.

Eventually the rumors might be true, but this just doesn’t make sense. for some reason. Granted, it’s not as ridiculous as the PItt rumor a few months ago.

So what happens to the Big XII?

Does the SEC move to lock up Texas and Oklahoma and wipe out the Big XII and trumping the Big Ten, or does the Big XII bring in two more teams?

So I used to go by MilCardFan, but I was able to change my screen name. Because I'm kind of a big deal. People know me. Yeah.

Dan Beebe(big 12 commish) in discussion with Larry Scott of pac-ten for joint college football tv package.

Mr. beebe is being pro active. I dont think the big 12 will go quietly. The big east commish, nada. I think he knows the next stop is the unemployment line.

I wonder.... if ND stays independent

and the Big12 implodes might Texas go the independent route? They are already thinking about starting up their own TV network and the Texas athletic dept is a monster. If ND and Texas are independent, there is no way the FBS could shut them out of BCS bowls or an eventual playoff system like many think could happen to ND if they alone stay out.

It’s great having something to talk about during the off-season for a change.

I think

that they almost hope ND says no. With (in theory) Neb and Mizzou leaving the Big 12, that conference is in trouble, which gives us the leverage to seriously offer Texas (and A&M with the Texas legislature) and bring the total to 16.

It never gets to be easy

I would LOVE for the Big Ten to land Texas

In any expansion scenario, but I just don’t see it happening. Somehow, though, I really don’t see Texas going to the SEC, as so many people assume will just happen. Will be interesting. Got to think that if it looks probable that the Big XII is going to implode, then Texas would move fast to be a primary mover and maximize its options, rather than being forced to settle for somewhere.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

Texas won't join the SEC

The athletics are strong but academically, half the SEC is a step above JuCo. If the Big 12 breaks up, Texas will either go PAC-10, Big 10 or Independant. I see them in the PAC-10 with either A&M or Colorado.

Include Kansas...

…and I’m all aboard.

I don’t exactly get why everyone is ignoring Kansas, frankly. I mean, yes, their football tradition isn’t exactly stellar — some bowls, including a recent BCS bowl appearance, but ultimately an average to slightly better than average program — but they’re on the same academic plane as Mizzou and Nebraska, would help lure in Nebraska and Mizzou (as co-members of the old Big 8), have a decent sized stadium and a television footprint equal at least to that of Nebraska, fit the Big Ten/agricultural/Midwest-like/state university profile…..but most importantly, would SERIOUSLY upgrade the conference’s strength in men’s hoops.

Yes, TV is driving the train here, but you can’t sleep on adding Kansas men’s basketball to the Big Ten network.

I’d like to see Nebraska-Kansas-Mizzou, then tell Texas and Texas A&M to get aboard….and if they don’t, either stay at 14, or, if you must go to 16, THEN go for Rutgers/Syracuse/Pitt/UConn in some configuration.

And That School In South Bend can, as always, go to hell.

That Is A Motherload of Teams....

….14, 16, that’s too many teams. Maybe it’s inevitable. I’m still opposed to ND (undeserving and mediocre team) and Rutgers (even worse than Notre Dame). I would have invited Missouri and Pitt and kicked out Indiana, putting the conference at twelve and eliminating a football dead weight, but maybe that’s just me.
