Texas Messin' in the Big Ten's Future?
This article was in the comments of the recent fan story, but it deserves front page attention all its own. The NBC affiliate in Kansas City is reporting that Texas and Texas A&M are in talks to join the Big Ten. It could happen as soon as tomorrow. With Nebraska (Tom Osborne just can't rid himself of those Texans).
Now salt grains should be large, but if this happens, Jim Delaney will have established himself as a chess board master (as Chadnudj noted in the comments).

It's a Kansas City news source so don't hold your breath...
It seems like the sports media there are really trying to capitalize on expansion-related exposure.
Perhaps they realize that after the Big 12 is vanquished, Kansas and Kansas State are treading water, and the city is no longer beneficiary to league events, they’ll be left out of the spotlight.
I guess it makes sense to start saving up ratings acorns…

It's not a terribly well-respected news source either

Texas and A&M to the Big Ten seems possible
but the timing just doesn’t seem right. I would be surprised if this is true. We haven’t heard anything indicating mutual interest, but now all of a sudden it’s going to be a done deal tomorrow?
Honestly
it wouldn’t surprise me that this happened.

I think the fact that this story is coming out of Kansas is major.
Kansas in all the expansion talk, appear to be the odd man out. I believe this story may be a weak attempt to gauge the other schools in the Big 12’s commitment. The schools that will be hurt most by the expansion talks are: Iowa State, Kansas, K- State and Baylor. I believe Baylor has some options available should the B12 dissolve. But, I-St, K-ST and Kansas are vulnerable. Being forced to join the Mountain West or some new unknown conference. Texas and A&M along with Nebraska would be a coup. I will believe it, when I see it. Nebraska, I think is a no brainer, I wasnt on board at first, but, they would be a perfect fit.
If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?
This rumor was debunked...
Several hours ago by at least two Texas sources. Texas and A&M can not go ANYWHERE without Texas Tech.
Texas is not even interested in the Big 10 and believes there is more money and power to be had in the Pac10.
Chip Brown has refuted the crap out of this all afternoon on Twitter.

Not necessarily
If you haven’t checked it out, go to Frank the Tank’s blog. The guy seems to have really developed some contacts, and he’s referenced some Northwestern message board traffic that nearly cause Jim Delaney to spontaneously combust.
I would not be surprised to see Texas and Texas A&M to decide on the Big 10 with Notre Dame and one of Mizzou/Rutgers/Pitt to follow.
I would also not be surprised to see the Big XII South to go to the Pac-87, and Notre Dame and Mizzou to go to the Big 10.
I would also not be surprised to see the B10 to stand pat with Nebraska and let the dust settle.
However it pans out, I am very excited.

if it comes down to Mizzou/Rutgers/Pitt
then I think Mizzou is in. I just have a hard time believing that either pitt or rutgers can offer as much. Rutgers athletics is not and never will be enough to land the NYC Market. ND does a better job of doing that when paired with Penn State and the other Big Ten alums working on the east coast.

the thing that really caused me to question this
was the timing. The article said something could be done by Thursday (or today). How in the hell could it be done before NE joins with TX talking about trying to keep the Big12 together? Just didn’t make sense.

Again, I reference Frank the Tank
and he’s said his source has claimed Texas has always preferred the B10, and they have been dancing and flirting for awhile.
Seriously, check out his blog. It’s an impressive body of work.

it will likely come down to whether or not
Texas can make its case politcally for how much it would cost them in lost revenue by taking a worse deal with Tech. By leveraging that to make sure they get additional state funding to cover. The concept of additional state funding would likely make it unpalatable for the Texas legislature to force the issue and allow Texas and A&M to join the Big Ten without Tech.
The State of Texas will pay for it dearly if they interfer with this decision too heavily. I think Tech and Baylor end up in the mountain west and that will have to be good enough for the legislature in my opinion.
Furthermore, if A&M gets into the SEC, and Texas requests Big Ten, then how can the state legitimately ask Texas to carry a dead weight around its neck?

Texas politics is an animal unto itself
And although you make legitimate points, when you’re talking century old rivalries logic doesn’t always apply.

true
logic doesn’t always apply. But you have to admit that 30M plus a year versus at max 20M should make an institution think. And if it doesn’t, I want nothing to do that that illogical entity. I can’t stand fools and don’t want them meddling in my business (if you know what I mean).

Does the BigTen have it’s own network?
If the answer is “Yes” then Texas will not join. They want to start their own “Longhorn Network” which they believe will garner them much more money than any conference deal could. Listen to NU’s Harvey Perlman’s presser early this afternoon and he explains that was one of the major reasons NU started negotiations with the BigTen.
[Osborne's] school has this ultimatum from Texas to either spit or get off the pot. Commit to the Big 12, Texas is saying, or we'll take this Pac-10 offer, rake in more cash and kiss the Big 12 goodbye. It's on you, Nebraska. Texas is good at this sort of thing -- it could blame Cadillac for those Toyota brake problems and get away with it. - Dennis Dodd

yeah when he said that
I started laughing about the Texas to BigTen rumors. If PAC10 agrees to that, then they are fools. Don’t they know that this will destroy their conference eventually? For a conference, you are either in or out. This isn’t the Hokey freaking Pokey here.

leave it to Iowa to pull that crap
but as far as teams go, you either subscribe to how we run a conference or you don’t. If you don’t, we say get lost. The reason the big ten is what it is, is due to our stability and consistency of image.
Any school that gets added needs to fit into that mold. NU does. If Texas won’t fully join (rights and all) then they don’t fit the mold and can stay out.

I thought
Texas was looking at starting their own network if they stayed in the B XII, to maximize revenue to compete financially with us and the SEsCh, and they weren’t looking to share, which is why Nebraska got pissed and left. There is no way a Texas Network could be as profitable as the B 10 network is right now. In time, they might be, but if we get ND and go east, B10 network will trounce a Texas Network.

I guess I don't understand your post.
Texas wants to do this regardless of where they end up. I don’t think they would destroy their baby (Big XII) if they didn’t have plans to carry forward with their own network. Perlman stated in Nebraska’s exit speech that the reason they were leaving the BigXII was a lack of commitment from Texas by way of DeLoss Dodds and Bill Powers saying they weren’t signing over their media rights to the BigXII. Why would this change in the Pac10?
The Pac10 has basically already told them “no Longhorn network” if they join. So we’ll see what happens. I think the likelihood of the BigXII sticking together is much higher today than it was 2 days ago.

then if they are smart
Oklahoma and aTm better jump to the SEC soon or they will be bled to death.

I know I could be way off on this
but I thought Texas is looking to maximize revenue, and the Texas Network was a way to do it to help get on par with SEC/Big Ten money. And that’s why they didn’t want to share, because what would be the point?
But if they could get Big Ten/SEC money by doing the Pac-16 thing with a conference network, or…join the Big Ten and reap the windfall with us, they would do that and forego a Texas Network.
Again, this is my interpretation, and subject to being WAY incorrect.
