Let the record reflect
that this website that “really knows their stuff” picked Illinois to go 10-2 in 2009.
Your witness, counselor.

Yes, they’re not perfect. Guess what . . . no person or website or magazine that picks every team’s record before the season is going to get everyone right (especially when you’re talking about 120+ college football teams). There are always teams that surprise or disappoint most predictions. So giving one example of a missed prediction means absolutely nothing.

This site loses credibility in my eyes
When they predict that Illinois will have a better season than Minnesota (I know, I’m such a rebel for thinking the Golden Gophers might actually win five or six games) and that Michigan State and Iowa will both finish with nine wins, as will Penn State, and that Wisconsin will win ten. That much parity seems unlikely this year, if I might opine. What really gets me, though, are the conference records: 7-1 for the conference champ, Ohio State, and 6-2 for the next three. I just see a little more decisiveness, in a word, in the way the season goes.

I don’t see what’s unrealistic in three teams finishing at 6-2 in the conference. (Last year, for example, OSU finished 7-1 and two teams finished 6-2 in the conference.) Now, it probably won’t happen that way because some team might do better than expected and some team will do worse, but it’s a reasonable prediction.
Also, I’d probably guess that most predictions will have the Big Ten finishing that way. I don’t see any way those predictions would make them lose credibility (unless you’re just upset where they picked your team).

Not at all
I just see the Buckeyes as a dominant factor in the conference (not my team), and I don’t see both Iowa and Wisconsin finishing with two conference losses.
My predictions (although not that different) would have Ohio State going a perfect 8-0, with Iowa or Wisconsin at 7-1, and the other at 6-2. However, I admit that these rankings are definitely realistic, though not likely in my opinion. The cellar of the Big Doce, however, seems somewhat random.

Math Challenged
The site might convince me more, but for 2009 they predicted Big Ten teams would win a total of 82 games. That’s pretty good considering they only play 88 total, with half being conference games….. so that’s a max of 66 victories. Maybe they could come up with some kind of futuristic technology, like a grid, to help them figure this out.
They have improved for 2010, predicting only 81 wins.
Team CFN Real Illinois 10-2 (2-6) Indiana 4-8 (1-7) Iowa 8-4 (10-2) Michigan 6-6 (5-7) MSU 10-2 (6-6) Minnesota 6-6 (6-6) NorthWstrn 7-5 (8-4) OSU 10-2 (10-2) Penn St 10-2 (10-2) Purdue 3-9 (5-7) Wisc 8-4 (10-2)

You must be math callenged yourself, because last year — using the stats you just posted — the Big Ten teams won a total of 73 games. So I have no idea how you figured out that they can win a maximum of only 66 games.
Yes, there are 88 games total — 44 conference and 44 nonconference. So if the Big Ten wins all of their nonconference games then the league would have 88 wins (because every conference game has a winner from the Big Ten, obviously).
What the website does is predict the winner of every game on every team’s schedule, so their math should be correct across all conferences (unless they make a simple addition mistake). They don’t just pick how many games they think a team will win without seeing how their prediction would affect other games.

You are right
I really goofed that up didn’t I. And I’m actually pretty good at math. Just prone to the odd stupid mistake.
The sites accuracy is OK, but probably no better than a million others.
You’re very defensive of that site though, it’s like your cousin made the picks.

I’m not defensive about the website and I have nothing to do with it, I’ve just been reading it since 2002 and I think it’s the best place for college football information and analysis on the internet. If someone has some legitimate criticisms then I wouldn’t object, but if someone makes a criticism that doesn’t make sense then I’m going to respond accordingly.

ummm what about Jesus? He was perfect
I’d wanna go to the sports book with him on Labor Day weekend, that’s for sure.
Close. It only counts in Horseshoes, hand grenades and Penn State football.

So did Phil Steele
well, he picked them to finish 2nd in the Big Ten, I think.
It just goes to show how hard these predictions are.
All those dark and frantic transatlantic miles
Not to mention a 5-win campaign from them this year.
Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

How about two Michigan linemen on first team Big Ten?
There’s no way Schilling is better than John Moffitt.
My kingdom for a spellchecker. Or Devin Harris. Hopefully both.
