Denard Robinson Runs Spread to Perfection Versus UConn

Final Denard stats and discussion

19-22, 186 yards, 1 TD

29 carries, 197 yards, 1 TD

I heard two reoccurring comments during the day. 1) Denard running the Spread against UConn looked like Madden 200whatever when you would put Mike Vick at quarterback and just run him around because his speed level was set at 99. 2) "I can't believe Denard can throw the ball so accurately. He could barely complete a pass last year." Denard not only throws a better spiral than Forcier, he worked a hell of a lot harder this offseason to learn the intricacies of the Spread and to learn where his receivers should receive the ball.

People may be urging restraint in getting excited about Denard and Michigan football ("he'll get hurt", "defenses will adapt", "it's just UConn"), but I will never, ever urge restraint. We wait all year for this and then when something bat-shit crazy awesome happens, you want me to be restrained? I had to sit through two years of ill-fitting players struggling to get first downs and now I have a rocket jet propelled race car obliterating decent defenses - Damn right I'm going to get excited.

Robinson "dazzled"...(Rittenberg)

Robinson runs Spread to perfection...(Freep)...plus a quote from Coach Rodriguez - "His decision-making, both in the run and pass game, was really good," Rodriguez said. "He is going to keep getting better. This is his first start."

Rich Rodriguez wants Denard to carry the ball less, but he also thinks Denard will get tougher...(Entire presser from MGo...And a GREAT quote from Denard about the UConn players trying to take his shoes off at the bottom of the pile)

Mgo Liveblog...from the FIRST five minutes of the game...

jesus christ he's fast

I heart Denard

Wow he is running so much better than last year

zoom, zoom, zoom

Its hard to believe this is Michigan.

the ball gets snapped, then there's this blur, and then all of a sudden they're spotting the ball 15 yards down the field

Why do I feel Michigan got amazingly lucky?

And why can’t I shake that feeling, no matter how hard I try?

I just can’t. There’s a mental block that’s preventing me from seeing what mgo bloggers are seeing.

Every time I see recaps of that game, all I see is repeats of last year’s DSU game. 63-6? Yeah, it should have been much, much worse for UConn. Ouch.

Big Ten Standings: Penn State 1-0, Northwestern 1-0, Minnesota 1-0, Iowa 1-0, Indiana 1-0, Ohio State 1-0, Michigan 1-0, Michigan State 1-0, Illinois 0-1, Purdue 0-1

UConn is no DSU—pretty sure UConn and ND are much better than any other competition the Big Ten faced this week.

"No matter how hard I try", haha

You’re not trying; you’re too busy being consumed with hatred of Michigan to try.

BTW, Sparty is in awe of your hatred.

Really?

There are Buckeye fans who are totally unfazed. Try again next time.

They got lucky

in the sense that UConn had a case of the dropsies. And that helmet-on-the-ball fumble near the goal line had a helping of luck to it.

How many 4th & shorts did UConn convert? Why did UM’s two RB’s combine for 30 carries and 98 yards?

UConn was clearly over matched, Robinson had an awesome game. Beyond that, I think everybody should be careful about what they take away from this.

Notre Dame will be a better test. I didn’t see their game, but it sounds like they turned in a solid performance against a not-so-hot Purdue.

Look, if Robinson avoids getting killed on a run up the middle against Big Ten LBs

He will DEFINITELY push Clay and Pryor for Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

But the last time he faced a Big Ten defense, he didn’t do too well. And don’t even think of calling the defenses he faced in scrimmage a Big Ten defense. They are NOT supposed to tackle him.

Did I say it was all luck?

No, I didn’t. I also didn’t mention that UConn couldn’t tackle worth a crap.

We’ll see how you feel after Michigan State and Iowa give Robinson some welcome to the Big Ten moments.

UConn's offensive line folded repeatedly.

The last time I saw an offensive line perform that badly was…Illinois vs. Tamba Hali and the Nittany Lions. It did NOT end well for the Illini…

Regarding pass accuracy

He did much better than last year, and hit his targets in the chest. However, I must give compliments to RichRod to making his throws easy. I don’t remember seeing 1 throw where the WR was not
a) stationary
b) completely wide open

Now, Robinson may never have to make tough throws to be a good spread QB, so that’s fine. I just wanted to make note that he didn’t make any hard throws, but he still played very well.

good comment

The Spread is set to minimize reads and most throws are going to be bubbles, quick hitters, or rollout throws. So I’m not he’s going to be asked to make “hard” throws this year, or any year. What’s funny is that Michigan State looked great on offense with Cousins, who in fact, is making “hard” throws the entire game. That’s going to be an interesting game, assuming Michigan keeps up their momentum.

Michigan needs to Bubble Screen better though, they aren’t good at it now. The WR’s can block, but WVU at their peak was bubbling constantly and effectively, which really stretches the field.

MSU had that awful run where

Cousins was 2/7 with a TD…

He managed to pull out a solid game after a poor start.

We're on the same wavelength, Graham

When I was watching our D get carved up by UConn’s subpar passing game, my first thought was “MSU is going to be a tough game this year.” Cousins has really improved as a passer, and he’s got weapons. But just being Michigan State should bring us about even, I think, as they’ll find some way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as they always do.

i'm surprised nothing was said

about the line play, especially michigan’s OL against the uconn DL. michigan did whatever they wanted with them, except for the one play that molk was out. that one play showed he is the backbone of the michigan offense, no matter who’s at qb.

yeah buddy!

Meeshigan's Offense is Back

Or is it Michigan’s offense? They don’t play like Michigan. So weird, but they are wearing Maize and Blue. Denard Robinson looked really good against decent competition (though given the Big East’s results for the week, maybe UConn was rated a little high.) I don’t know what you can take from Michigan’s defense, but Robinson could just save Rodriguez’s career. UM needs to finish at least what, 8-4?

by BradBanks4ever on Sep 5, 2010 4:41 PM CDT reply actions

It is the first week

and I am not so sure Robinson can survive if he is forced to carry the ball as much as in the UConn game. He is no doubt a very good football player.

OL played great as well

Denard was amazing but the OL pushed around the Uconn DL the whole game.

It will be interesting to see how this all works against the bigger Big 10 teams….should be fun to watch.

Its a joke that ND only had two penalties called on them, when they did this kind of ridiculous crap ALL GAME LONG on Kerrigan and Gooden. And Kerrigan still had 2.5 TFL.

I've said it before: ND bias has gone too far.

Ridiculous. I hope MSU crushes them this year.

Wasn't it a year ago that the world was abuzz over a 185 lbs Michgian QB?

and where is he now exactly? And how did that season go? All this game proved is how much the press wants Michigan to succeed.

Production

I was surprised how good Michigan’s OL looked in this game. Much of the time, DR wasn’t touched until he was 5-8 yards down field (of course, when he was touched it was a weak, ineffectual tackle). I think UM fans should be VERY concerned that 1) they got approximately 0 production from everyone not named Denard Robinson and 2) their back 7 only avoided disaster because UCONN players elected to grease their hands before the game. Denard Robinson is the real deal, but the rest of the team didn’t really show me anything that impressed me. We could see another 4-0 start and 0-8 finish.
