It's Been a Long Time

Hit the music...

Thanks, Southside Johnny. That makes me feel a little bit better, but not much. You see, my friends, it has been a long, long time. On Saturday, the Iowa Hawkeyes will have the Northwestern Wildcats over to Kinnick Stadium. By my math, Northwestern made 22 trips to Kinnick through 2002. Iowa went 18-4 in those games. Most of them weren't close.

However, 2002 was the last time that Iowa beat Northwestern upon God's field in Iowa City. Nine years is far FAR too long. How long has it been? Let's open up the November 9, 2002 time capsule and see just how long it's been.

Cut the music...

Star-divide

It's been SO long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick...

Banks_medium

  • How long has it been? It's been so long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick, that five days before the last Iowa win, Northwestern elected Rod Blagojevich to serve as Governor of Illinois (the rest of the state is getting a pass here. We're blaming Blago entirely on you, Northwestern).
  • How long has it been? It's been so long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick, that the reigning box office champ at the time of the game was The Santa Clause 2. I hold Northwestern responsible for that, too.
  • How long has it been? It's been so long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick, that Eminem's "Lose Yourself" was the Number One song on the billboard charts. And the idea of the song being used to peddle cars was just silly.

  • How long has it been? It's been so long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick, that the day before that game, the United Nations unanimously passed Resolution 1441, requiring Iraq to fully comply with weapons inspectors to ensure that the country was obeying the orders from the end of the previous decade's Gulf War. In other words, this has lasted longer than the War in Iraq.
  • How long has it been? It's been so long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick, that Northwestern has played in, and thus lost, five bowls since that game. The Wildcats have been allowed to travel to Detroit (where they lost to Bowling Green), El Paso (where they lost to UCLA), San Antonio (where they lost to Missouri), Tampa (where they lost to Auburn), and Dallas (where they lost to Texas Tech).
  • How long has it been? It's been so long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick, that Iowa has beaten EVERY OTHER BIG TEN TEAM* IN KINNICK STADIUM AT LEAST ONCE SINCE THAT GAME. That's right, currently Northwestern has gone the longest without losing in Kinnick.
  • How long has it been? It's been so long since Iowa beat Northwestern at Kinnick, that this shit has gotten old. It ends this Saturday. Hawks 27 Cats 21. If this is the year that Penn State slays their pest, we get to do it, too.

*Nebraska, you're not a real Big Ten team until you come to Kinnick. That makes this year and almost all of next season your probationary period.

No probably more like 18

Then we’ll manage all of a field goal in the second half.

I do wonder though..

How long its been since Nebraska lost at Kinnick?
100 years? Perhaps 200?

1981

They’ve only played there once since then.

How long has it been?

Half the conference has been to a BCS Bowl Game since Iowa last beat NU at Kinnick. Take note that this is one of those strange stats that result in such fantastic groupings as Michigan State, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, and Nebraska all being in the same pack.

Not that unusual of a grouping

If you look at it, those were five of the six “bottom-half” teams as the B1G did its division alignment last year. Swap Illinois and Nebraska, and you have it dead on.

That's the fun of it.

My team isn’t in the shitty group!

And we'll finish above you again this year.

Quick question though, so when NU loses their next game, how long do I have to wait to receive my food bet winnings? Does it come at the end of the year or as soon as they hit four losses?

LOVE that song! (Southside Johnny)

Hadn’t heard that in…a long time. Did that really come out in the early 1990’s? Wow…

Anyway, thanks for making my afternoon, Bama!

The text message booty call... it made college so much more awesome for me

ME: Whatcha doin?
HER: Lying awake cuz my roommate snores and I can’t fall asleep.
ME: You can come sleep here if you want ;-)
HER: Don’t want to walk across campus alone. Can you come meet me at my dorm?
ME: See you in 15 min.

Funny story.

During the 2006 season (which just felt glorious up until Florida), I had my computer set to blare Buckeye Battle Cry at 6:30 AM on game days. Me and some buddies from the track team had started a tailgate that year (which we still carry on to this day though all of us have graduated) and we had only one rule for the tailgate: It starts at dawn. No matter what, the tailgate would start at dawn.

So it’s before the Michigan game and the alarm goes off, and the girl in bed next to me starts freaking out. Then she looks over and sees me (still drunkish from the night before) marching like the drum major out of the bed room to the fridge to grab an ice cold Nati Light.

HER: What in the hell are you doing?!
ME: Getting ready to go to the tailgate!
HER: What?! It’s 6:30 AM!
ME: I bet Tressel is already awake!
(she gets out of bed. Throws her clothes on… reaches for the vodka in the freezer, and pours some into orange juice)
ME: What are you doing?
HER: I’m going with you!

I fell in love right there.

Ahh yes… The one that got away…. #greatwhitebuffalo

I managed to keep one like that around...

Oh Marsh...

…this really is turning into a bad season for you isn’t it?

by GoAUpher on Oct 12, 2011 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

5 years and counting...

At least with the Gophers being so bad at football, I’ve already stopped caring about how they’re playing by the time that game rolls around, but she was at every Wisconsin fan’s favorite game in the Metrodome – but before I even met her.

When Jerry Kill gets things back to respectability, there is definitely going to be more friction. I’ll be surprised if she’s still with me the week after the Gophers finally win one against the Badgers, cause it’s going to hit the fan.

Yeah, but...

There is a downside… I feel my generation – especially the females – have not developed adequate communication skills. I meet very few women under the age of 27 that can carry on a conversation. Granted the guys aren’t much better. I knew guys that thought that if a girl played beer pong with them it was a sign that the girl was interested in that person.

by TheHumbleBuckeye on Oct 13, 2011 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Hate to break this to you, but very few people in any era can carry on a decent conversation.

Granted, as you get older, people get better at it, but all your life, the majority of people you meet are going to be crashing bores.

That chick was, like, the Pele of anal.

Bizarro world

Normally I’d assume NU would beat Io_a again. Except, Penn State beat Iowa this year. Nebraska is in the big ten, which has 12 teams. Ohio State is not in the running for the conference championship. Illinois is 6-0 for the first time in 60 years. No team from Florida is ranked for the first time since 1982.

The Detroit Lions are 5-0 for the first time since 1956!

Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.

What are the odds

that Iowa crushes Northwestern this week and then promptly turns around and loses to Minnesota? (And how painful would that be?) Seems like this team exemplifies, in the extreme, the stereotypical outcome of “do what we least expect”… ….

by BamaGatorHawk on Oct 13, 2011 8:56 AM CDT reply actions

I'd say unlikely...

…but maybe Kill has been in contact with Fitz and they are breeding some kind of evil magic lutefisk or something.

by GoAUpher on Oct 13, 2011 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

my bad

guess those odds are too good since they play Indiana first. But I could definitely see them losing to Indiana before unexpectedly winning at Minnesota (at least Floyd would come home that way…)

by BamaGatorHawk on Oct 13, 2011 9:01 AM CDT reply actions

No

They’re not losing to Indiana in Kinnick.

Could they lose at Minnesota? After seeing last year’s team do it, it wouldn’t be the most surprising result.
