Emails forwarded to Pryor's "Mentor"
[BH: We'll obviously have much more to say about this as time moves on, but for now, here is your post for talking about the lessons of Dick Nixon that Jim Tressel never learned.]
I'd have to think this can't be positive. But whether it's just kind of bad or pink-slip-portendingly bad, I don't know. Anyone care to weigh in?

I've been a Pryor apologist for a long time, but
if this fiasco ends with Tressel getting shown the door I never want to see this guy in the scarlet and gray ever again.

They're both at fault.
But still, Pryor is obviously a moron, and only his play on the field deserves to be defended anymore.

There's just got to be a point where this guy grows up
Thought it was going to take place 12-24 months ago. Obviously not.
I hope Braxton Miller is taking notes on all of this and putting it on his not to do list.

I agree.
To be fair, he did do all this as a freshman, it isn’t recent. Maybe he has grown up and this is just dredging up his past. That being said, he still is the team’s leader, and he was a team leader as a freshman, so it’s still a dumb, nearly inexcusable, mistake.

I don't think this article really says anything bad about Pryor specifically
beyond the fact that he has a well-known guy that some would label a sort of “handler.” I think this was known, however, or at least widely rumored.
I put it here because not only does it give a little bit of an answer to the question “did you forward these emails to anyone”, but it gives an answer that is, at the very least, contradictory to Tressel’s “I kept it secret to maintain confidentiality” excuse by virtue of sharing it with someone outside the school (with it still being unknown whether he actually shared it with someone INSIDE the school) and at worst a questionable communication with a person who is not really considered a booster, but is a non-affiliated adult with a personal relationship to the star player and former generational recruit, which is a situation in which those acquainted with the history of college football recruiting and those generally inclined to thinking cynically will clearly have their ears perk up at the potential for something larger stirring in the bush.

I agree, but Pryor should no better. The situation started because of him. Tressel made it worse, but it started with Pryor.

looking more and more
like this is going to hit the administration and not just Tressel. Especially if it’s true that they knew about this when they did their press conference and confession letter.
The administration was obviously ok with turning a blind eye to Tressel.
but Tressel is still the one who is at fault.
i just dont think the administration did……….anything really. clearly Tressel is just doing whatever the hell he wants over there and they arent checking up on him.

which probably means
some combination of probation, scholarship cuts, and bowl bans. I’m thinking best case for OSU is vacate 2010, probation for however long, and a few scholarship cuts. Not sure if it’s reached bowl ban level or not yet, but I’m thinking at the least it’s getting close.
I think that's apparent
the blind eye that is. And will lead to a lack of institutional control finding. This isn’t SMU violations, but I think a NCAA banhammer is coming to a fOSU nearest you and soon. The timing is horrible, the PR embarrassment the NCAA endured because of the Cam Newton thing will cause the NCAA to ‘clean house’; in my opinion.
There are no rose colored glasses thick enough to make this look good and in the end it hurts us all. My question is, who’s the next fOSU coach?
That's the key
if the administration can be shown to have knowledge, then lack of institutional control is the tag. There’s not much bigger in the NCAA bag of hammers
It never gets to be easy.
Why the fuck doesn't it ever get to be easy?

I think the "i hope he doesnt fire me" line should be enough proof
what a stupid thing to say. it makes what USC did before their punishment look meek, and USC basically flipped the NCAA off and dared them to do something.

I agree. E. Gordon Gee should be fired over that statement
Big Ten presidents should not be subservient to football coaches. I know OSU Prez Gee meant it as a joke, but it went down as poorly as Groupon’s superbowl commercials. Now, when perception is reality, we in the big ten should hold ourselves to high ethical standards. ( I want to resist making a crack against oversigning in the sec now )

At best this screams cover-up attempt by Tressel
At worse, it will be confirmed as a cover-up attempt. I want to change my prediction of punishment from the other thread to add three-five years show cause penalty. And add lack of institutional control penalty to fOSU, putting them on probation for ten years considering they were already on repeat offender status.
I think the real question now is when will Tressel be gone? We should start a pool…
If they look at the Jeannette guy
in any depth, I’d be SHOCKED if they didn’t find an NCAA violation. I tend to think that there’s a LOT more at play in Pryor’s recruitment/ongoing financial support (see borrowed cars, occasional flashy clothing/jewelry, etc) but that’s not even important. With the way the NCAA regs are set up, if this guy is determined to be a booster, pretty much anything that he’s done for Pryor will be a violation. If he’s not categorized as a booster, there still might be some violations.
If you know ANYONE from Jeannette, you know that this isn’t clean. These emails just provided a direct bridge to investigation.
You make a great point
With the way the NCAA designates ‘representatives’ how will this guy not be designated as one since Tressel contacted him will be beyond me. As I’ve stated before I hate fOSU and so anything I say about them should be taken with a huge grain of salt, but they have screwed the pooch. And… They got caught…
Holy crap

I just can't see a way that Tressel survives this
The only question seems to be whether he gets fired/works out a settlement, or the NCAA hits OSU with a show cause penalty (effectively firing him from there).
He could be fired
and also hit with a show cause from the NCAA. That would mean that in practicality, no one else can hire him for whatever period of years.
Tressel is 9-1 against Michigan
he isn’t going anywhere.
If the NCAA hits him with a show-cause
and after all of this, I have a hard time imagining they won’t – then OSU basically has no choice but to fire him.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.

This is starting to look USC-level bad.
I’m thinking show-cause for Tressel, vacate 2010 (and possibly earlier, depending on what comes of this car dealer), 4 years probation, big scholarship reductions, two year bowl ban.
Tressel can’t possibly survive this at this point. The NCAA really frowns on lying to them, and when he got caught in one lie he made another. Pearl might get hit with a show-cause for his mess at Tennessee, and he fessed up after he got caught the first time.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.

I hope OSU fires him, because I really don’t trust the NCAA to do anything right after the Newton BS. I don’t think they will though, because a lot of the fans still don’t seem to think that this is a big deal.
Not trying to equate wrongs here
but if the NCAA didn’t do anything to Auburn then they’re not going to fire Tressel.

There wasn't enough evidence
As provided to the Reinstatement Committee BY Auburn. There may be enough evidence in a future hearing if an independent NCAA investigation is taking place, as I suspect (and sincerely hope) is the case. See my post below.
by OctaShields on Mar 27, 2011 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions
I've said this before, but it bears repeating
The NCAA isn’t done with Auburn. The Reinstatement Committee is the NCAA body that considered the Newton suspension. It’s purpose is efficiency, because most of their decisions regard urgent issues (like “can this player play next week?” for instance). They ONLY consider information as presented by the school itself; there is no formal investigation. If Auburn came forward and said they had no evidence of wrongdoing, then the reinstatement committee woulds say “alright, we won’t suspend you then.”
HOWEVER (Stephen A. Smith style), if there is an official NCAA investigation into Auburn and they get notice and have to take part in a hearing before the Committee on Infractions, they will be pretty much doubly screwed if it turns out they weren’t 100% forthright with the Reinstatement Committee. And I’d obviously have a hard time believing that were the case. So that’s the incentive to tell everything you know before the Reinstatement Committee, but I suppose a quick cost-benefit analysis from Auburn’s point of view at the time would have probably favored their, you know, impending title chance.
So basically, you can’t really judge the NCAA as an entire institution until we see whether Auburn ever comes before the Committee on Infractions. At worst, you can question the procedures in place for the Reinstatement Committee, since they would have essentially been lied to and allowed a team to play for and win the MNC even when they were past the point of no return and it will later be vacated. That story isn’t over. What we DO know about the NCAA is that the Committee on Infractions (where OSU’s investigation is undoubtedly going to end up) does not F around. See: USC for a prime example from recent history.

Kudos for pointing this out.
So many people seem to think the NCAA is done with Auburn re: Cam Newton. They are not.
In the history of college football, no player, no coach, no guru, compares with [Les] Miles’s masterful incorporation of applied chaos theory and time relativity into strategic game planning. Simply put, the man is on another level. A level many don’t or can’t understand. Genius.
Neither is Ohio State, which is kind of the point.
But like I said above, he’s 9-1 against Michigan, so nothing to see here.
Exactly, which is why I hope the University does it on their own.
