Here You Go

This is good for Iowa, since Iowa won’t be playing Wisconsin with Wilson (he has only one year left) and this will stunt the growth of their other QBs.

And that stretching logical leap, is the best that I can do for you.

If we make it that far

Vandenberg panned out and the LB’s are on fire. As long as we figure out punt coverage by then, we’ll do OK.

Depends on how good Vandy and the Dline really are

if they are good, we are a contender, if not then we arent. that simple really because the other positions either are proven or are almost always damn good in Iowa (Safety and Tight End).

other than that, my other worry is how deep the roster is.

This rule

It’s not inconsistent, and it’s a rule that makes sense.

If you complete your undergraduate studies (with eligibility remaining) and want to pursue a graduate degree in a program not offered at your school, you can transfer without taking a year off.

It makes perfect sense. And, in a world where more than 99% of student-athletes are going pro in something other than sports, it’s a good rule.

Guesses as to Wilson’s course of study? Something offered in Madison, but not Raleigh.

It didn't sound like Ted...

…was questioning the grad rule. He was wondering about the “pro in another sport” ruling I think.

I don’t have a problem with it. To me, it wouldn’t be logical to say that if you are pro in one thing you can’t be pro in something else. But the NCAA has said similar things before. Like that Colorado WR who had to give up FB so he could train for the Olympics in skiing. His training was funded by an endorsement and the NCAA wouldn’t let that go. That was dumb.

by GoAUpher on Jun 27, 2011 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

It came down to

the source of payment with Jeremy Bloom. If he was payed by a skiing team, it would have been fine. But, he wanted payments from equipment companies.

NCAA doesn’t want to open a loophole where Andrew Luck gets $5 Million from Nike as sponsorship for his pursuit of his table tennis career during the offseason.

by GoAUpher on Jun 27, 2011 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Right on

I was about to post about Bloom and pull out my Sports Law hornbook to cite the actual NCAA rule, but you hit on it.

It’s actually a more liberal rule than most. You are allowed to be fully professional in a sport and keep eligibility in any other sport. You can’t get endorsement money, however.

The problem comes in a case like Bloom. He wanted to ski professionally and play college football, which was fine. However, he also wanted to be able to profit from endorsements. He argued that the endorsements came from his skiing career and should be included in the “customary income” of his skiing career (since skiers generally make more money through endorsements than actual competition). The NCAA argued that endorsements, whether for skiing or anything else, should jeopardize his amateur status in football, since you can’t prove that he’s not profiting from his status as a Colorado football player.

Both sides had good arguments, but the court deferred to the NCAA’s interpretation. Basically, they said that there’s “no way to tell whether he is receiving pay commensurate with his…football ability or skiing ability.” This made sense, since he actually already had an ad campaign with Tommy Hilfiger which marketed him as a multi-sport athlete.

Bama Hawkeye is right on pointing out the kind of pretense endorsements that NCAA regulations seek to avoid. As for inconsistency, it comes down to the fact that this rule is MUCH easier to police – if a dude is on a commercial or is showing income from Nike or something, it’s pretty obvious. The inconsistency on cash handshakes and whatnot is mostly because they’re hard to actually catch and compel testimony about in their hearings without any power or subpoena.

Correct

Thanks to you and Bama for clearing it up. I thought that a student athlete was ineligible to participate in any sport once they went pro in any sport. I knew there had been exceptions, and I was going to use Jeremy Bloom as my example, but you guys addressed that as well.

So basically, someone can turn pro and still have eligibility as an athlete as long as it’s not in the sport they want to play in at school, and they receive no endorsement money?

I honestly think Iowa is going to knock that door down for this year at least. I think we should all know by now that giving them low expectations is a very bad idea right now. I think they are a top 20 team at the minimum.

Unfortunately, I am very concerned Michigan State won’t do as well this year. I think they are going to suffer from the “better team, tougher schedule, lower record” deal.

As for OSU, that is a major “if” right now.

I think Illinois has the better proven QB, and a RB in Jason Ford who I think will be every bit as good as Mikel Leshoure was.

Granted, they have some questions on defense, but when their defense was on last year, they were pretty good. I’m not ready to say Illinois is clearly better than Iowa, but if they can be more consistent on defense, I think they’re right there.

Maybe it takes three years

Because most 18-20 year olds aren’t ready to come in and lead a team in front of 70,000 fans in the stadium, and millions more on national television?

Wilson already knows how to lead a FBS college team and he’s definitely got the skills. Now he just needs to sit down and cram the playbook into his brain. Considering the course load it takes to graduate in 3 years, I’m guessing that kind of studying isn’t anything new to him.

It's a legitimate concern

My only counter would be 1) the kid has experience playing, so he won’t be a wide-eyed true freshman, 2) he has training camp AND a weak non-conference schedule to get acclimated, and 3) you can always hand the ball off to Montee Ball. Or James White. I cover some of these in the article that just went up.
