"Consider Them Rolled."
Amidst the Wisconsin hate and welcoming Nebraska to the Big Ten, let's remember this today -- Jim Delany has huge brass balls. At least, that's what I took away from this story by Teddy Greenstein in the Chicago Tribune which details how Delany calling ESPN's bluff led to the Big Ten Network, Nebraska joining the league, and Delany re-gifting a bottle of champagne as an "Eff You" gift....
So pop open a bottle of re-gifted champagne and give thanks for Jim Delany today, ladies and gentlemen.

I'll give Delany this
he doesn’t take a lot of shit. So far it has worked out for him (and us), hopefully it stays that way.
We're gonna go America all over their asses!
I've said it before and I'll say it again
When it comes to stuff like this, Delany is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

Wow.
I wouldn’t ever want to have sit across a board table from Jim Delaney while we were at odds on something. The man knows his business.
He’s no Dan Beebe, though. Because he doesn’t own a gimp mask emblazoned with a Longorn logo across his zippered up mouth hole. (He doesn’t actually own the mask. He leases with an option to buy.)

Delany is great at the big financial decisions.
He sucks at the other stuff, like divisions and division names and PR, but stuff like this is what makes him a good commissioner.

Just give it a few more years people...
The bottom of our conference is making money hand over fist thanks to BTN. It’s only a matter of time before the money starts talking on the field.
Reminds of the conversation I had with a knowledgeable Bama fan at the Alabama-Penn State game last year: "I think people down here hate the Big Ten so much because they have their own network. You can get it on cable in the South. The fans down here are clamoring for their own national network as well, but they will never get. There’s no interest in basketball down here to make it viable year ’round, outside of Kentucky. The Big Ten has interest in all their sports: football, hockey, wrestling, basketball. They also have a longer history and more consistent membership which goes a long way to making special “Best of” programs."
by TheHumbleBuckeye on Jul 1, 2011 10:21 AM CDT reply actions
he also added that
“there are still a lot of people in the South that do not have cable or satellite. Thank God for the SEC on CBS.”

Um
LOL. I’m sure you said it someone else but didn’t I see you say you lived down there? If so, where?
Hmmm, interesting POV
But SEC fan hates us because we have our own network? That just seems…weird.
"Lord I pray for the eyes of an eagle, the heart of a lion and the balls of a combat helicopter pilot."
It was his opinion...
He was a pretty knowledgeable guy who was in the Alabama marching band and was back in Tuscaloosa getting his masters. That was just his opinion, but it does make sense. As he said “The SEC has no reason to hate any conference right now. We’re on top. Our fans don’t hate any other major conference like they do the Big Ten, and the only reason I think that is is because of the Big ten Network.”

More ammo for anti-B1G bias at ESPN
Everyone needs to keep this in mind as far as sports reporting from the WWL. THEY ARE NOT IMPARTIAL OBSERVERS and their reporting reflects that.
Hopefully, at some point in the future, Herbie will admit that he was getting encouragement from the folks at Bristol to distance himself from his alma mater. Coincidentally his anti-Buckeye comments started about the same time as the BTN. Go figure.
If ESPN doesn't own it
They pretend it doesn’t exist and will refuse to acknowledge it. This goes far beyond the BTN. How often do you see ESPN “confirming” a report that Team X…? That is nothing more than ESPN re-reporting someone else’s scoop while refusing to give them the credit for their efforts.
Somewhat relatedly, ESPN’s desire to own everything in sports is why they ridiculously over paid and will never make a dime off the Longhorn Network

agree the Texas deal was a bad one for ESPN>
TExas got what it wanted, but they should thank Big TEN Network for that. ESPN has become an arrogant, jackass evil monster and wants to dominate everything. I am happy Big ten is doing well with their own TV network.
Me too
It is nice not having to be secpn’s bitch. It was evident on their bowl coverage as well. How many times did they bring up the B1G record in bowl games on New Years? They have bashed the B1G on a regular basis. According to them, our teams are slow and antiquated and inferior to their mighty sec teams.
When you go 0 for 5
on the premier day for bowls, it’s hard to not be the top story.
Multiple-touchdown defeats at the hands of a single conference (worse, a single division) do absolutely no favors for reputation, and we found that out the hard way with MSU and Michigan (SUCKS) going down the way they did. MSU might have done better against LSU (but that depends on how merciful/crazy/stupid Les Miles is on a given day), but we’ll never know.
49-7, though? That’s going to be a sticking point for a long, long time. “Look at the 9-3 SEC team that only lost to SEC teams beating the shit out of a Big Ten Co-Champion!”
Excuse me while I go vomit.

Personally
I think Michigan’s defeat to Mississippi State was more detrimental to the conference’s reputation than Michigan State getting dismantled by Alabama. Alabama was the defending national champ going against a Michigan State team not known for winning bowl games. Michigan is one of the more prestigious members of the B1G and they were cut down by a team known for being an also-ran in the SEC. Also, the Gator Bowl supposedly features a higher ranked B1G opponent vs a lesser ranked SEC opponent. All in all, it was bad.
tsun
hadn’t been to a bowl game in 3 yrs. They were middle of the pack and got pasted by another middle team. Do you really think anyone was surprised that tsun got beaten? Was RR not even sure he still had a job?
MSU was favored by some experts, and it shocked most people. Look at the Vegas odds for the game.
Ok
Michigan was 6 point dogs and Michigan St was 10.5 point dogs. So anyone who was shocked by MSU losing was also shocked by the Dream Team winning the gold medal.
But point spreads aside, when an Alabama team coming off a national championship destroys a generally middle of the pack Michigan St program, it’s not a huge shocker. However, when a generally middle of the pack Mississippi St team destroys a traditional power like Michigan, even if it’s on hard times, it resonates more in the national consciousness.
That 'middle of the pack' MSU team
was a conference co-champion that had an argument that they should have been in the BCS. I don’t think anyone thought they were going to beat Alabama, but 49-7 with Alabama putting in their second string early in the second half was the lowpoint for the conference.
"Lord I pray for the eyes of an eagle, the heart of a lion and the balls of a combat helicopter pilot."
There was more focus on RR’s job than the game. Tsun was not considered by anyone to be a strong team. Tsun had not been in a bowl in 3 yrs, so how was anyone shocked they lost? MSU was a highly ranked team, tsun was not. I don’t think a top 10 team is “middle of the pack” either.
I don’t think he meant middle of the pack for the 2010 season, I think the point was that Michigan State over the last 25 years has been a middle of the pack team, where as save for the last three, Michigan had been a conference/national power.
So to the casual fan, or person not all that interested in college football, who didn’t know the records going into bowl season, it would be less surprising to hear Alabama curb stomped Michigan State than to hear the same about the Wolverines being curbed stomped by Mississippi State.
Obviously to the people posting here and blogs like this perception is different, and we know the Spartans were much better this season than the Wolverines, but in terms of casual observers nationally I think the Wolverines are still looked at as the better program. And that is not an attempt to downplay the Spartans, so please don’t call me a hater or a typical Michigan fan.

The whole reason they ridiculously overpaid
for the Texas network was specifically to keep the Big 12-2 together. If they had fallen, the superconference scenario would’ve opened up the money floodgates and independent TV networks, as the PAC 12/14/16 would’ve commanded one, an even further expanded B1G of 14 or 16 teams would’ve been in position to tell ESPN to REALLY pay up or piss off, leaving ESPN with the SEC.
Which right now, is the prize to have. But ESPN realizes, just like everyone else outside of SECville, that this is all cyclical, and when the SEC falls, it will fall pretty hard, and the TV dollars the SEC commands today might not be the TV dollars the SEC commands 10 years from now (adjusted for inflation, etc) once all the oversigning goes away and the extent of the cheating comes to light.
"Lord I pray for the eyes of an eagle, the heart of a lion and the balls of a combat helicopter pilot."
I disagree on the reason
ESPN paid what they did because they thought they could make money on the deal. And with the population base in Texas and their craze for all things Longhorn, they probably will make quite a bit of money. I don’t think they’ll make BTN money right off the bat since there are more possible subscribers in B1G country than Texas, but they’ll get plenty of filthy lucre.
I don’t think keeping the Big 12 together was a part of this deal. It was money from Fox for the secondary games that kept the Big 12 together. Granted, part of the reason Texas stuck around was because there was no restriction on creating their own network. But the Big 12 was safe for at least the next few years because of the Fox money. If anything, the Longhorn network might cause the demise of the Big 12 if it leads Texas to believe they can make more money if they go independent.
I remember at a conference this past winter..
Delaney was defending the bowl system amidst calls for a full playoff by the likes of TCU, Boise, etc (full disclosure, I’m a fan of a +1 system, but that is it. The regular season is the playoff). Essentially, Delaney was saying that conferences like the Big Ten and Pac-10 built college football into what it is by agreeing to the first bowl games. They built the fanbases and brought the money, and now Johnny-come-lately Boise wants in on the money. No casual fan watched the Boise-TCU Fiesta Bowl, but they watched the TCU-Wisconsin Rose Bowl, because the big powers are still the product, and they’re what drive the sport. Nobody cares who Boise is playing unless it is a big conference team, so you’re damn right the big conferences are going to look after their interests, and we will NEVER do away with the Rose Bowl tie in to the conference. Ever.

The Rose Bowl is great but...
They have to do something about that stadium for chrissakes. Man, what a wreck!
Totally different experience watching it on TV versus actually watching a game there.
Totally agree...
The tradition isn’t as much about the stadium as it is being in Pasadena on New Year’s Day. They could knock it down and build a new one in it’s place for all I care.

Maybe I'm too used to B1G stadiums
Frankly, I was kind of shocked at the state of the Rose Bowl. It just gave the appearance of not being well maintained.
Plus, it took an inordinate amout of time to get from the gate to my seats due to incompetent staff and narrow passageways. After the game, they put up metal fences to direct traffic and funnel people into the walkways from both ends. Made me very nervous from a safety perspective.
Last I was not happy about the sightlines from the endzone, probably the worst I’ve experienced in a college stadium.
They could probably fix with some massive renovation but I’m sure it would be cheaper to tear it down and build new.
Well, I don't blame the staff
They’re not used to a capacity crowd… UCLA hasn’t been very good for a long time. And even then they don’t sell out every game.
http://www.cnbc.com/id/41060717/College_Football_Attendance_By_The_Numbers
UCLA had 66.3% capacity last year. Ouch.

I agree, to me it seemed as though they tried to modernize it one too many times and never finished any of it. Other than the one end with with wall of fame for the Rose Bowl game, it is not a very awe inspiring stadium.
I know SouthbayBuckeye hates the Coliseum, but to many the aesthetic of the outside of the of it much better than the Rose Bowl ( I’ve never been to a game at the coliseum though, so I don’t know what it is like to attend a game there)
this is very true

great job by Jim Delany.
Jim Delany did a gr8 job with BTN and it is a showcase and business lesson for every conference commissioner. He challenged ESPN head-on and made more money than anyone ever thought. He negotiated hard and never let ESPN dominate the Big ten TV deals.
Look at Texas, Pac 10 all starting their own TV channels, took a cue from Jim Delany’s playbook!
