How good were these guys? Sometimes we just don't know. Schedules don't allow it. In 1988, we know exactly how good Michigan was. They were two points worse than #1 Notre Dame. They were one point worse than #2 Miami. They were eight points better than #5 USC. They were better than everybody else (tie in Iowa City be damned). Michigan fit right in that gap. Of course, if Mike Gillette's last second kick against Notre Dame fit through the uprights, it may have been a different story...
