A Game Thread All Sparty's Own

We'll have a full open thread tomorrow for all of the game action. But tonight, we'll set this out for anyone who wants to talk about Michigan State's opener against the Penguins. Kickoff will be at 6:30 CDT on the BTN. Frankly, if Crosby's concussions are still keeping him benched, Michigan State shouldn't have much trouble in this one. So if you accidentally flip over to the Baylor/TCU tilt and discuss that, it'll be OK.

Happy-feet_medium

Come on in and have a seat.  If you're new to our open threads, the rules are easy to follow: No racism, no sexism, no homophobia, no personal attacks, no pornography, and no illegal internet streams of the games. That sound you hear is the ice hitting the bottom of the rocks glass...

Agree

I’m just extremely tired of the msu homers and their unequivocal devotion to the thought that they will run away with the division.

I can't tell if Sparty's front 4 just isn't that good or if they're unlucky

Sometimes it looks like they’re getting blown off the ball, sometimes it looks like they’re overpursuing. Either they aren’t that good or YSU’s playcalling is both good and lucky.

I just tuned in and lol’d. So far, Wisconsin >> Sparty. Either MSU is trying to avoid their playbook to keep it hidden, downplay expectations, and maintain an underdog role, or they’re just not as good as advertised. I’ve been saying Sparty would be exposed this year, and I stand by it.

Just so everyone remembers

MSU best Western Michigan, Florida Atlantic, and Notre Dame (not the good, November type. The type that would get curbstomped by a rebuilding Navy team and lose at home to a young Tulsa team) by a combined 27 points last year. This is not out of character for them

"I play for Penn State, we don't celebrate after TDs." - Penn State's Derek Moye, on being asked to act like he's celebrating a TD during a BTN shoot.

by ckmneon on Sep 3, 2011 7:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Not quite true

MSU beat Western 38-14 last year. Beat FAU 30-17. Beat Notre Dame 34-31. So that’s 40 combined points.

More relevant comparison: beat Northern Colorado 45-7. MSU doesn’t run it up quite as much as other schools do, but they still should beat a team like YSU by at least another TD.

hmmmmm

Is it too early to give Robert Griffin III the Heisman?

yep

Sparty has some issues. They may be fixable, but there is a lot that needs to be done. Discipline. Tackling. Coverage.

I'm not certain

but it feels like discipline has always been an issue at Michigan State. They have an amazing capacity to shoot themselves in the foot (especially against Michigan, and weirdly enough, against Minnesota)

Don't forget

Purdue, and Penn State, and Ohio State… ugh :-(

The sideline is always greener at MSU.

Sigh.

There seems to be a Rodney Dangerfield “no respect” that pervades MSU football.

Saddly, tonight’s effort is going to gain them any respect. They look very beatable and have a lot to work on.

The sideline is always greener at MSU.

MSU hasnt been consistant enough in recent years to gain much respect yet

The whole “one of six BCS teams to not win a bowl the last ten years” thing doesnt help much either.

one good year doesnt earn you much respect, a good decade does.

wow … TCU has come back all the way to take a 48-47 lead with 4:27 left ….

Crazy kicking in this game as well …. 2 missed XP (one on each side)) and TCU has missed 2 FGs

Lead-in to SportsCenter - "Sparty manhandles the Penguins"

I know they wound up winning by 22, but we must have been watching different games. Playing like that against an FCS school doesn’t warrant the use of the term “manhandle”

Angelo: Right….so anyways Jay, I’m sure you understand that we needed to make this move and I wanna wish you the best of luck.

Cutler: (Swoops bangs out of eyes by throwing his head back) Whatever, I don’t need this team or you.

It's the WWL

What do you expect? They probably didn’t watch the game. They just peaked at the box score.

You're right

There’s probably a company-wide policy forbidding them from watching the Big 10 Network.

Definitely a qualifier for the Big Twelve...

Of course, I hated the 09 Texas team so much that seeing them lose, even to Alabama, made my heart sing.
