Spanning the Empire: Your Sugar Bowl Open Thread
It's Michigan! It's Virginia Tech! It's the Sugar Bowl!
It's a return to the national stage for Michigan. Win, and they can dream about bigger things for next year. Lose to a meh Virginia Tech team, and the critics will declare that the Wolverines only won 10 because of a soft schedule. This is a big game as you look forward to the 2012 season. The drink of choice? Something as classic as a winged helmet. On the rocks for me. Neat for my wife.

Bowl title should be lack of merit ball.
Both teams are here for pure financial reasons.$$$
MIchigan played 8 games at home. VTech lost twice to Clemson. To prevent games like this we should have a playoff system
Congrats on your bowl win yesterday, and agreed on the playoff system. Michigan is here because they’re actually a pretty darn good football team this year, though and beat some solid teams. On the other hand, VTech beat no one of consequence, and is in fact there for financial reasons.

yeah I forgot they beat a solid who...
Neb at home, OSU at home, ND a home.
solid NW on road. solid Illinois on road.

That’s a pretty big stretch. Blown out by Wisky, woulda been blown out by OSU if not for Brax going down, beat by a crappy NW team, barely beat a crippled PSU. Not to be a jerk, but they were a pretty average Big 10 team IMO, which isn’t saying much.
They beat a team that beat the mighty MSU Spartans

There wasn't a lot above average
in the conference this year.
"Go hard. I mean, like relentless. I want a bunch of coaches that coach like their hair’s on fire, and I want a football team that goes for four to six seconds (per play) with relentless effort." OSU Coach Urban Meyer.
Wow, Molk is out for MICH
That’s a huge loss for them, and it’s showing early.

Dude, we're 4 minutes in
If Molk doesn’t play at all that could have a huge influence on the outcome, but it’s way early.

Well at least they got something. BTW, anybody read that article VA Tech’s long snapper wrote about how ridiculous bowl week is? Worth a read.

Whatever result you get
depends on which Denard Robinson shows up.
Wild Denard = Probable win over Michigan
Good Denard = Probably loss to Michigan

What do they put in the water in Ann Arbor?
Because they are luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucky
Yea I thought it would be a false start
i think they got lucky with that one (like a lot of other things this game)
So many crazy crazy B1G events this year
-Touchdown-fest between ND and UM
-Both MSU and OSU hail mary TD against Wisconsin
-Leaping sack by MSU on OSU
-Backhanded, one-hand catch by McNutt
-Incredible B1GCG
I know there have been so many more!
How does Denard have the ability to literally lob it up in the air
and have a receiver catch it? It’s just incredible.
It’s like he closes his eyes and just heaves it
It's the damndest thing I've ever seen
But hell, it works.

Big miss
MI is going to luck into a win after getting their butts kicked all game long.
No way
He made 4. Blame the offense for letting it get to OT.
Most fans, I think
He’s 3rd string. They outgained MI 372 to 179. Blame the TOs.
What about ...
MI getting blown out by an ACC runner up that didn’t beat anyone all season and hearing about it from ESPN ad infinitum for the next 12 months?
The B1G could go 10-0 and we'd still be slow
and this would be a fluke.

True
By try losing to the ACC in the BCS and see what happens.
We'd never hear the end of that...
This Hokie team is what, 1-27 (1-19 in the Beamer era) against top 5 teams? I think their wins against ranked teams is equally dismal.

And it's good
Thank you, Michigan, for proving that our conference can still beat the ACC.
I got the impression from this game that the ACC can beat itself
and Michigan can stand there and collect the benefits.

As an aside
predict Michigan only wins 8 or so next year. Can’t get this lucky again.
I was rooting for UM
til I saw the sign about MSU and tears tasting like sugar. Then I went VT the rest of the game.
Congrats UM. You won, though it wasn’t pretty. I just don’t want to hear about it for the next 12 months.
And let me make one point perfectly clear, before the UM trolls stumble in
UGA (SEC) >>> VT (ACC)
Congrats on your victory (no sarcasm).
Maybe not >>>
I’d say > or maybe >>. But the point stands otherwise.
Yeah, right
I just don’t want to hear about it for the next 12 months.
What are the odds of not hearing about it? At least MSU also won.
I don't have a real dog in this
fight, but what the hell does Michigan brag about? The TWO national championships they’ve won in the wire service era (1936). Talk about doing so little with so much. Losing more Rose Bowls than anybody else?
I’ve never, ever understood the Michigan hype. All advantages and little results.
Seems like a large part in losing more Rose Bowls than anyone comes from going to a shitton of them.

This made me strangely turned on.

There's no way you hear about it for 12 months...
The next UM/MSU game is in ten. In any case, I don’t think this is a game Any UM fan will willingly watch again.
Both UM and MSU benefitted from the other team’s fuckups. As a UM fan, the only thing I have say about the win is this: It’s official, Brady Hoke shits horseshoes.
And, by the way, is Beamer a great coach or what? VT wasn’t as talented as past VT teams, but even with every possible break going against them they hung in, played hard, played smart, and nearly came away with a win. Impressive.
On the contrary...
I felt that his team played very sloppily and lacked discipline. The number of crucial penalties was face-palm-worthy, and clearly players took risks on questionable personal decisions rather than play safe, sound fundamentals. True, they showed a ton of heart, but I think that smarter coaching could have sealed this one.
Not to take anything away from UM taking advantage of these things and executing where they should. We OSU fans know a thing or two about being given awesome opportunities and squandering them.
"There is a force that makes us all brothers, no one goes his way alone." --Woody Hayes
My take:
2 signs you are a horrible coach:
1. You get every ounce of bad luck possible (bad luck follows poorly prepared teams)
2. Your name is Frank Beamer.
I thought it impossible until last night that someone could make Bret Bielema look like a smart jock, but old Frank did it with ease.
As a Spartan fan, this wolf team doesn’t scare me in the least. Horrible O line play by them tonight.
Lucky, favorable schedule, hype, media bias, bad refs, blah blah blah...
Before this season who thought Hoke would lead Michigan to 11 wins? Nobody.
The fact that he and Mattison fixed the defense and got a BCS win with this team is a major accomplishment no matter how it happened.
(And don’t worry Sparty fans. Everyone knows your team is the best!)
What a way to end the season
I can’t really think of any way that Hoke gets off to a better start. He’s established himself as a coach on the rise, and there will be a lot of talk about Michigan going into next season.
And you guys that rooted for all the B1G schools except Michigan can kindly go fuck yourselves (but thanks for the few heart-felt congrats).
If the call in the end zone hadn't been overturned...
Or if either of the fourth down plays had worked, Beamer would be a genius. And being aggressive, given the way his quarterback played, was the right thing to do. Even the running into the kicker penalty, dumb as it was, was the result of playing to win.
Their defense played great. Maybe Molk was hurt. Maybe Robinson had a bad game. But you don’t hold Michigan’s offense to 184 yards without staying in your lanes. That’s what I was referencing.
College football is maddening because some days “the better team” means nothing more than “the team that made fewer mistakes.” And some days, in all sports at all levels, the ball just bounces your way. I’m happy my team won, but I know what I saw last night. Michigan made plays, especially on defense, and they got a lot of help from the football gods.
Now excuse me, I have to go sacrifice that goat I promised Moloch at the beginning of the second quarter.
