It's finally upon us. The biggest game of the year, possibly the last five years, possibly the last millennium...

And yet Big Ten football fans are stuck between a rock and a Saban. Who does one pull for, and because you're a realist and a semi-crazy sports fan, you must always have a rooting interest.

The Case for the Irish

If this was Bleacher Report, I'd do a slideshow of the top 10 reasons to root for Notre Dame. #1 would be, simply, tradition. That would be an aggressive bit of trolling. Anyways, it's easy to make a case for the Irish, because they should be one of our twelve fourteen many B1G members. They're Midwest, they love football, they care about rivalries and football lore.

The Case for Roll Tide

A tougher sell. We love underdogs, not dynasties. That's why I spent the entire 1990's rooting for Florida State to lose. Bama is about to pull another nat'l championship, their third in four years, and that's even more unbelievable with the parity in CFB.

Plus, um, Nick Saban. Per the local Alabama paper, he does one endearing thing per year by donating kitties to a local orphanage. He then kicks each cat for the remainder of the day until they learn to line up in an I Formation.

So..???

Yeah I don't know either. It's a fun game because of...tradition and hype and such. But I've gotta go with Alabama on this one. Do you really want to live in a world where Notre Dame is king? Do you really want to spend the next year watching puff pieces on ESPN about:

• Brian Kelly
• Defensive Stands
• Irish Tradition
• Notre Dame is Back!

You see, right now, the order of College Football is somewhat intact. But if Notre Dame wins, it's all on its head. Right now, the 2012-2013 Irish season has been one of tremendous fortune. Remember that hardest schedule in the nation thing? Lots of those teams turned out to be not Top 25 material. Remember how teams kept missing field goals and slipping on turf and inexplicably choking, giving the Irish win after win? Well if Notre Dame wins tonight, it means you have to acknowledge the Irish as the top team in CFB. And that's a pretty bitter pill for the entire B1G nation to swallow.
