There is no worse place or worst place (I checked is worst, but who cares, this is a rant damn it!) to be for a sports team, than being just good. You see, if you are just good, then you become complacent. You say, well, it could be worse (I checked again, is worse), we could be Purdue. But damn it, good usually doesn't lead to great. Sure there are cases that good becomes great, but that's the rare occasion. My Huskers right now are good, not great, not terrible (although they sure as hell can be on special occasions). And this irks me to the nth degree. By being good, you get people saying; "give it time". Well, how long? When can we go and say; "lets get a new coach". The problem with Nebraska is, TOM OSBORNE.
Yeah, the greatest coach in the history of college football, an immortal is part of the problem. You see when Dr. Tom Osborne first started coaching, it was a different game. Tom went through some not so great patches. Sure, he wasn't getting his ass kicked more than once a season. But fans want to point out to how long it took Dr. Tom Osborne to become great as a reason to keep Bo Pelini around. Remember, he is good, not great, and not terrible, give it time, look how long it took Tom Osborne.
I am tired of that argument, different era different times. I want my team to be great or terrible this season, no in-between. Oh I know, you are thinking; "what a POS of a fan. Wanting his team to be terrible? How disloyal could you be?" Well, I am more loyal than a hell of a lot of other fans. Look, I don't believe in Bo, at all. there are zero, zero recruits coming to visit the team this week, zero prospects! Not one recruit is thinking that is worth taking a trip to Lincoln, and hey trust me, Nebraska has offered everyone and their cousin. When a recruit thinks of Bo, he will think of a guy that screams at fans, screams at players and gets blown out.
Tomorrow, I cannot find it in my heart to root for Illinois to beat my Huskers, but if they do, I won't be upset about it. Deep down, I know it must happen, it is the only way that change will happen. I hope I am wrong, and I hope that somehow, someway Bo pulls it off and gets a B1G title and gets us to the Rose Bowl and we win it. But I really doubt it. Stuck in being good sucks, it doesn't bring change. And yeah, I know about Bill Callahan, like that is the only fate that will await us. Hey, what about Bob Devaney? That worked out excellent for us. So, yeah, Bo suck if you are going to suck and lets get this bullshit over with, no more 9 or 10 wins season, cause I don't believe you can get to the next level. Other wise, get us to the Rose Bowl and win it.
A few more points, I want to get my money's worth from my rant. A) Nebraska is a great job for a coach, it gives you what you need to win, MONEY a ton of it. B) Lincoln is a great city to live in, especially if you are a winning head coach. C) fans here are not unreal, they aren't expecting you to win every game. But don't get blown out at least twice a season, and win a conference title at least once every 4 years. D) Yes we can get great recruits in Lincoln. Bama gets great recruits from all over, is not like Tuscaloosa is paradise, when have you ever heard anyone, who was not a Bama fan say "for our vacation, lets go to Tuscaloosa!" NEVER. Also, when the team was great, is not like there weren't maps in the 90's. Is like Tom and company could lie to recruits and tell them "oh yeah, Nebraska, that's right next to Florida, Tommie". Win, and recruits will show up.
