2009 Memorable Milestones - September

11

Identifying the biggest game, best win, worse loss, and biggest moment for the month of September.

Goodbye. Good Riddance.

Pete Carroll has resigned from USC and is off to Seattle. Let's be clear. USC's dominance over the Big Ten didn't begin under Pete Carroll. As I detailed this Fall, it goes back further than that. That said, Pete Carroll took Big Ten Abuse to a new level during his seven meeting with conference members. Of note, Carroll didn't do this against the dregs of the league. USC beat each of the four best teams of the conference this decade, and until the 2009 meeting in the 'Shoe, no Big Ten team had come closer than a 14 point loss to the Trojans. Goodbye. Good Riddance. Jan. 3, 2003: USC 38, Iowa 17 (Orange Bowl) Jan. 1, 2004: USC 28, Michigan 14 (Rose Bowl) Jan. 1, 2007: USC 32, Michigan 18 (Rose Bowl) Jan. 1, 2008: USC 49, Illinois 17 (Rose Bowl) Sept. 13, 2008: USC 35, Ohio State 3 Jan. 1, 2009: USC 38, Penn State 24 (Rose Bowl) Sept. 12, 2009: USC 15, Ohio State 13

The Payoff

As you may remember, I, high on confidence in my Northwestern Wildcats, made a bet with an Auburn Tigers blogger named Jay Coulter. Jay writes over at the SBN blog Track 'Em Tigers. We each put a package of local food on the line with the losing team's representative agreeing to send the food at the conclusion of the game. Well, that losing representative was me. I upheld my end of the bargain and sent Jay a package of hot dogs from Portillo's with all the Chicago style fixins. I think he liked them, but head on over to Track 'Em Tigers and judge for yourself...

ESPN: Big Ten Is the Best in 2010

It looks like Mark Schlabach may be making that case. His Way-Too Early Top 25 has Ohio State at #2, Iowa at #9, and Wisconsin at #10. The Big 12 is the only other conference to have even two teams in the Top 10 (Texas and Nebraska). The Mighty SEC has only Alabama at No. 1. Add in Penn State at #19, and no conference has more than the 4 teams that The Big Ten places in his Top 20. I know that these pre-season polls don't win games on the field. But, they do set the media narrative. Next year's narrative WILL NOT be "The Big 10 is too slow to win." Instead, the Big Ten is being given respect greater than or equal to every other conference. It's going to be a great new year.

So we beat on...

Those readers who just joined us this season, might not know what to expect now that the curtain is down. I'm hear to say that this is when we do our best work.

Three in the Top 10; a Quarter of the Sweet 16

The AP and Coaches Polls both were made public in the wee small hours of the morning. The Big Ten finished the 2009 season with much more respect than it had to open the season. Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin should have high rankings to begin the year. I anticipate that Penn State will be ranked as well. The SEC will still, justifiably, be considered the best conference in football, but the Big Ten can make a stronger case than anyone else that it is second. And gaining ground on the leader. Happy New Year indeed!
