The B1G-MAC Fantasy Challenge: Week 3

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Two weeks down and this series is still running. Sure, you all haven't started flooding MAC chat rooms about the dominance that is B1G fantasy football yet, but there is time. Oh, there is plenty of time.

That said, last week wasn't... great. I had a really good lineup in my opinion, and things would have worked out for me just fine if we were facing Week 1 #TeamHustle, but Alex did not mess around. Here are the results from Week 2 in the B1G-MAC Fantasy Football Challenge:

So yeah, let's just say that was bad for #TeamEmpire. On the flipside, each week is a new week and we are now tied up 1-1. This week, I'm starting off the lineup intros and Alex will follow up on Hustle Belt with the final locked-in roster spots. If you haven't caught on yet what we're doing, Alex from Hustle belt and I are competing for the greatest award in sports - fantasy dominance. Each week we choose players from our conferences and no player can be used more than once every four weeks. Also, we choose a loser from the other conference for a bonus five points. Get it? Good. ON TO THE BANTER!

Jesse: Alright Alex, it’s time for me to pay up. After a good first week, quite a bit of smug pride, and a little bit of gloating, I’m now sitting on the other side. There really is no other way to put it. I got absolutely worked over… Like, almost 100 points bad. So let’s get to it… What went so right for you and so not so right for me? Was this the football gods telling me talking trash about a lightning cancellation?

Alex: *lights another cigar* Jesse, dear friend. I, wow. Just… I’m still at a loss of words. About midway through watching the Bowling Green vs. Maryland game, I’m thinking to myself "today’s going to be a good day." And then Toledo takes down Arkansas too! So I’m like "okay, okay, I’m not lying to myself here." Then I look at the EMU game and my alma mater won their first non-conference road game in nearly 30 years! It wasn’t long until I realized that I’ve got a lot of profiles from those games in our Fantasy Challenge. To be honest, I almost feel bad for all of this. (I take that back, I’m feeling pretty damn good about last week)

Jesse: Yeah yeah. I will say this. Seeing Toledo beating Arkansas was awesome. That’s what Bert gets for talking trash about the - admittedly - weak Big Ten slate for this year. All that said, it’s time for me to make my triumphant return to the top. After all, it’s all, I have the #TeamEmpire reputation that needs to be upheld. I guess I’ll just get to the picks… This week is where that four week non-duplicate starts to rear its beautiful head. It’s also the point where I remember that the Big Ten doesn’t have a ton of great QBs. So, who am I going to start? Jake Rudock, Michigan. DId you see how the Wolverines got their score scrolled across ESPN’s ticker despite a) not being ranked, and b) not being ranked? I love the Harbaugh effect. Still, I like the matchup against UNLV. I think he should get some points on the board this week. Lining up in the backfield with him is my new current favorite RB, Terrell Newby, a good Nebraska boy. He almost got to 200 yards last week and if Nebraska is going to beat Miami this weekend, they will need him to put up the points. Speaking of RB, who will be starting in the backfield for #TeamHustle?

Alex: I was actually watching that Michigan game too last week [against my will]. My buddy’s basement has a pretty neat setup so we’re watching too many games at once, and it looked like Rudock had a really comfortable pocket to sit in from the bits and pieces that I caught. But my second running back is going to be Shaq Vann from Eastern Michigan. He’s the second-stringer, yes, but he’s going to be splitting carries with Darius Jackson all season and he absolutely blew up last week against Wyoming. They’ll be playing against Ball State this week. Ball State does not play defense. I like my chances here. I’m also going to gamble at the wide receiver spot with Miami’s Rokeem Williams. I’m not digging the RedHawks’ quarterback situation/not situation, but whoever’s taking snaps will have Williams to throw to. They’ll be playing at home against a rivaled Cincinnati team: a great opportunity for the junior to be a breakout player. What about your team? Who’ll be your receiver representatives?

Jesse: I’m throwing out some new guys - because I have to, but stick with me - at wideout. My first guy who will be burning past #TeamHustle is Iowa’s Matt VandeBerg. So far this season, he’s proven to be one of the most reliable parts of a surprisingly decent Iowa attack. Not unlike what you described, some of this is a matchup thing. Sure, Pitt showed some decent chops the last two weeks, but Akron and Youngstown State do not tell the whole story. I think Iowa will actually move the ball efficiently and VandeBerg will be a reason. I’m also going with Illinois’ Geronimo Allison who has been Wes Lunt’s early favorite. Illinois has looked… good so far? Weird, I know. I think they keep that up and knock off a P5 team this weekend. Why? Because that’s the most Illinois thing ever. Oh, and I’ll be throwing out a new Flex player this week. I’ve enjoyed the Connor Cook train, but I’m thinking it’s the Cardale Jones show this week. Yeah yeah, two QB system and all, but I think one of these days Jones is going to go off and why not against the Huskies? Really, I’m just trying to get more B1G-MAC action. So who you have next? A TE, right? Someone from my current favorite MAC team?

Alex: Yes, and with quite the name! No, not the Zmolik part, but the Alex part! Alex Zmolik is a big target that Phillip Ely oughta include more in the Rockets’ passing attack, but I love the potential for him. They lost last year by the slimmest of margins to Iowa State, but I’m expecting Toledo to come out swinging on offense and get more offensive production and scoring this week, especially with only putting up 16 last week. But wait, there’s more! Jameson Vest will be my Toledo kicker playing for #TeamHustle. If that offense gets rolling and he gets the PATs, or at least in field goal range, I’m really confident that he’ll be a valuable part to giving me a winning streak.

Jesse: I love me some Toledo! I’m especially enamored with any team that makes Bert look silly. Wait, did I say that already? Anyhow, I figure I’ve given the Fighting Harbaugh’s some talk this week so I’m going to fill out my defense with the Michigan Wolverines Defense. They’ve done their part so far this year and I think I might even get me a defensive touchdown this week. Maybe. Hopefully. Man I need to get back to winning. Speaking as a loser, why don’t you tell everyone your B1G Loser of the Week.

Let the history and small sample size show that my B1G Loser has gone on to win their games. At least I’m picking fun games to watch? I dunno, moral victories. Let’s check the matchu-... no. No. This is a trap? This is most certainly a trap. I keep checking the matchups and I’ve been duped the first two weeks. No more. Purdue. Purdue will lose. #points

Jesse: I look forward to the #AlexReverseCurse (hashtag pending). We’ll know it’s real when the Boilers beat Virginia Tech and we get all, "BETTER WATCH OUT FOR THE B1G" or something like that. I don’t know. I just want to chant BEE-ONE-GEE and not be sad about it.
