Why The Big Ten Champion Should Make the Playoffs Over Alabama

We know how Alabama Crimson Tide’s regular season ended. They played their “schedule”, lost the last game, and now await their fate. The Big Ten division champs still have to battle it out to decide who is the best in the Midwest.

Let’s first look at what should happen if Wisconsin Badgers wins. They would be undefeated. They would have beaten ranked teams in 3 of their last 4 games. They would be a major conference champion. Wow, that wasn’t so hard. Only a moron would pick a one loss Bama over that team.

Where it gets tricky is if thee Ohio State Buckeyes win.

Let’s look at the bads first. Ohio State has two losses. One, an embarrassing loss at home to Oklahoma, a probable playoff team. Two, an embarrassing loss to Iowa. Just losing to Iowa is embarrassing enough, but Ohio State actually got smashed by them. Things are aren’t looking good for the Buckeyes at the moment.

Alabama has one loss, to Auburn in a rivalry game. I can accept that. Auburn is a solid team, that has one impressive win against Georgia, one impressive loss to Clemson, if you believe in such a thing, and one loss to an LSU team that isn’t impressive. No other win impresses me. you could maybe make a point of calling the Mississippi State win as impressive, but you would be wrong. So right now, Bama holds a 1 loss to 2 loss edge, or they are +1 over our beloved Buckeyes.

However, I am a positive person, and I like to look at positive things, like wins.

Let’s check out Ohio State wins. if they do beat Wisconsin. That would mean they beat Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan. To varying degrees solid teams. Let’s scratch the Michigan win because we all hate Michigan. That puts Ohio State at plus 2 in the win column.

Alabama has exactly zero quality wins. Their best win is against an 8-4 Mississippi State team that lost 2 of their last 4 games. In their two “wins” in that span, they beat UMASS by 11 (you can’t spell UMASS without ASS) and Arkansas by 7.

In this scenario where Ohio State wins the Big Ten Championship, the math is simple. You have Bama holding an edge at not sucking as bad as the Buckeyes, while you have Ohio State holding the edge on being gooder. If you want to reward bad, I have a problem with that. We are a great nation. We award greatness. So if you think Bama should be in the playoffs, you are bad mouthing the United States of America.
