2017 NCAA Tournament Preview: Purdue Boilermakers

Big Ten Champions!

NCAA Basketball: Indiana at Purdue Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Purdue won the 2016-17 Big Ten Championship. They have Caleb Swanigan, a near-lock for Conference Player of the Year, and a legit candidate for National Player of the Year honors. Purdue is definitely going to participate in the NCAA tournament.

Record: 24-6 (13-4)

Remaining Schedule: at Northwestern (3/5)

Big Ten Tournament Seed: 1.

Probable NCAA Tournament seed: 4-6. I’ve seen year after year that performance in the Big Ten Tournament, no matter how good or bad, does not affect seeding in the tournament. So, it looks like Purdue will probably be a 4 or a 5.

Key Players: Caleb Swanigan (18.6 ppg, 12.5 rpg); Isaac Haas, Vincent Edwards, Dakota Mathias, PJ Thompson, Carsen Edwards, Ryan Cline

Can they make a run?

Yes.

Purdue is a solid team, with both solid inside play and good outside shooting. They definitely have the pieces in places for a good run in the tournament. While the Boliers are far from perfect, and could potentially lose almost any game, their outside shooting and ability to get to the line and hit free throws can cover up a lot of the defensive deficiencies that have plagued Purdue this season.

Will they make a run?

I really hope so. The conference championship is pretty neat, but I’d really like to see a Purdue team make a deep run in the tourney before I leave this mortal coil.
