Where We Be, What We Be Drinking: Week 5

OTE’s weekly look at where the “writers” will be watching football and what adult beverages they’ll be consuming

Greetings loyal readers, let me be the first to welcome you to Friday. We made it! This week we’ve got Grain Belt, Cubs baseball and even a High Holiday. Let’s go around the country and see what everyone is doing.

Creighton: I’ll be making waffles and watching West Ham in the morning. I’ll probably stay home instead of going anywhere this weekend, but I’ll be drinking some Perrin Triangulation and Alewerks Pumpkin Ale. Mmmmmm pumpkin ale! The eggnog of beers!

Graham: Iowa, MSU. Spartan Stadium. Two-Hearted probably, as to honor the fact that Michigan is the best state for microbrews. Should be a beautiful Midwest day, 60 degrees and clear. College Football!

Zuzu: I'll be in the land of College Game Day. Unfortunately, as always, I'll be working and serving Hokies before for their "super bowl" which comes weirdly early in the season. Wish I could go and hold up a sign that says, "#GameDay2Piscataway, 10/21/17, #Rutdue!!! Edit*** I have now learned of the incredibly early time of College Game Day which actually doesn’t conflict with my work schedule... hmmmmm...

BigRedTwice: Nebraska is playing one of those newfangled "Friday night games" this week, and all indications point to it being a complete derpfest. However, I will instead be engaged in watching what I think should be a highly entertaining match between two great volleyball teams in Nebraska (#8) and Minnesota (T-#3) in Lincoln. The match starts at 5 pm and is on BTN (will wonders never cease), so I think you should all follow my lead and check out this match rather than trying to watch Nebraska and Illinois "play" football. On Saturday, I'll be working all day, and checking into our Slack channel periodically to hopefully enjoy some meltdowns from some of my fellow "writers." (I'm pulling for it to be Speth.)

Alden Karmapolis: East Lansing, unable to pass up the flawless weather and the belief that maybe we can be a little better at not making horrendous mistakes.

WhiteSpeedReceiver: I will be getting to my tailgating spot early Saturday morning so I can have a Grain Belt or two before taking the Green Line to the capital to run the TCM 5k. Then I'll race back to campus for a few more Grain Belts before racing into TCF Bank Stadium to watch our opponents get flipped onto their shell.

Candystripes for Breakfast: I will be working during the first half of IU-PSU, and probably wishing I was working during the second half. Thankfully, it will have cooled down enough that I won't need to be chugging water at work to not get dehydrated, but I doubt I can get away with anything more exciting than a cappuccino from Starbucks or something. PS: working on Saturdays during college football season is lame, but you probably already knew that.

Aaron Yorke: It's Yom Kippur! And Penn State is playing during daylight for the first time in three weeks even though this is the one Saturday on which I need a night game. I'll record the action and maybe watch at my parents' house later after consuming absurd amounts of bagels, cream cheese, lox, and herring until my tummy hurts. We break the fast in a Rutgers home, so I am hoping for the return of Gary Nova lox. Get it? I cannot wait for Saturday night.

Dead Read: In lovely downtown Lincoln. As a public service, I will isolate myself from other human beings to watch the Husker/Illini clash of the titans Friday night. I will spend Saturday morning coaching, then retire to my favorite chair for a day of football gluttony.

LincolnParkWildcat: I’ll be in Lincoln Park, either in my apt or a bar drinking goose island or a few daisy cutters.

Thumpasaurus: Apparently East Lansing is the site of the OTE Mitten Militia Summit, because I will also be there. I'll bring a flask of Old Beezer 10 year. If you happen to find me, we will do a shot. I will stick out like a sore thumb. You may think I'm kidding; try me. :D

Brian: I’ll be in Los Angeles this weekend, commemorating Michigan’s off week with an off week of my own.

Nate: I'll be in Chicago, drinking whatever is in my fridge. Probably going apple picking after the game. Mmmmm Honeycrisps.

Speth: I'll be at Camp Randall in the grandparent's seats. I'll probably be drinking crappy beer before the game. Yay Miller Lite!

Jesse: GTFO with this Friday nonsense. I'll be at home here in Austin after work, probably a little annoyed, and my reward is Nebraska-Illinois on a short week. Amazing. No way this doesn't end poorly. I'll be eating BBQ to drown my sorrows. That's a plus I suppose.

Stew: Got last minute tickets to the Cubs game on Saturday. First time back in Wrigley since before kids. Will be catching the rest of the Iowa/MSU game in Wrigleyville.

As usual, let us know what you’ll be doing for game day in the comments.

One last thing: I think I speak for everyone here when I say OTE will be pouring one out for Brian Towle this weekend. He was an absolute boss at Corn Nation, a dear friend of Off Tackle Empire and a damn good bowler. We’ll miss you buddy. If you like, there is a GoFundMe page set up for Brian’s wife and two children.
