Big Drum in the Music City: Friday Bowl Games Open Thread

Purdue takes on Auburn in Nashville, followed by two matchups of ranked teams, two of which are, shockingly, Syracuse and Iowa State. It’s been a weird year.

Sometimes when I write these, I wake up, have a cup of coffee, and just wait for inspiration to strike. Other mornings, I struggle to come up with anything beyond “should we just write about something random and pass it off as an article?”

I did neither today.

Glen Mason Memorial Music City Bowl

Purdue Boilermakers (6-6) vs. Auburn Tigers (7-5)

The prospect of the Big Ten playing a bowl game in a vaguely “warm weather” location (never mind that it was about 35 degrees for last year’s Music City Bowl) and being able to have a home-field advantage like Purdue could is...well, it’s almost a little disconcerting.

I think it cheapens whatever Purdue does in this game. If they win? Nah, it was a home game! If they lose? They got the kindest possible bowl outside of the Motor City Bowl, and they fucked it up! I remember being in the Northwestern marching band at the Outback Bowl in 2010 against Auburn, and that was 50,000 orange-wearing, eagle-humping bumpkins screaming weird cheers and waving their arms and generally terrifying us, and were it not for the grace of Mike Kafka, we still would have possibly won/lost that game! (Seriously...I’m not sure to this day what to make of that performance except that it was baffling as shit.)

Stefan Demos, tho...fuck right off.

Better cheer?

Camping World Bowl

#16 West Virginia Mountaineers (8-3) vs. #20 Syracuse Orange (9-3)

We’re moving into the actually-good segment of games on the bowl schedule, and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, it’s nice to see actual games with actual atmosphere and actual teams...

On the other, Cal and TCU threw 9 combined interceptions and scored 17 combined points. AND I STAYED UP TO WATCH IT ALL.

Oh shit, Will Grier isn’t not playing in this game, is he? FUCK. So the entirety of this game becomes Eric Dungey running around and doing Eric Dungey things, like he’s done the rest of the season, somehow running for almost as many TDs (15) as he threw for (17).

...sure, that’s better than watching TCU essentially wave a white flag and somehow still win a bowl game.

I didn’t just make it up. Read a goddamn Wikipedia article.

Valero Alamo Bowl

#24 Iowa St. Cyclones (8-4) vs. #13 Washington State Cougars (10-2)

Alamodome, San Antonio, TX
8pm | ESPN | Wazzu -2.5 | O/U 57.5

Northwestern at 4-10, has the second-worst bowl winning percentage of any Power 5 school!

I know what you’re thinking—the other one is Iowa State, and that’s why I’m mentioning that unfortunate statistic here.

WRONG! Turns out the Indiana Hoosiers, at 3-8, have the worst bowl record of any Power 5 school. We mentioned yesterday, and you’ll no doubt remember, that the Hoosiers have not won a bowl game since the 1991 Domino’s Pizza Copper Bowl, when they beat the Baylor Bears 24-0.

Extremely Stephen A. Smith meltdown voice: HOWEVUH

With an Iowa State loss, the Cyclones would move to 4-10, tying them with the Wildcats for the second-worst Power 5 bowl winning percentage (.286). [Washington State, since you didn’t ask, is 7-7.]

That’s more than enough for me.

Go Cougars. Go Gardner Minshew II, you weirdly-named sonofagun. Go Dread Pirate Leach.
