Ever since I became a Northwestern fan in 2000 I’ve always been impressed with the fandom’s creativity, especially when it comes to photoshop, writing, and later on, videos.
To be clear, I’m not referring to Medill alums working as professional journalists or our good friends over at InsideNU or the Daily Northwestern, who are awesome and provide some amazing content. I’m talking about the people who are in other careers, or like me, Northwestern fans who didn’t go to the school taking the time to share their insights about the team across several different mediums.
Some of the longer-term Northwestern fans might remember Far East Wildcat, a superfan from Tokyo who’s dedication to the team really gave me important context and background into the team. F.E.W stopped posting back in 2005, but he helped a writer called the Waterboy, a former player, provide some excellent post-game analysis during from the twilight of the Barnett era onward on FarEastWildcat.com and later on HailToPurple.com
HailToPurple.com is a combination blog and library for everything about NU Football. You should seriously check it out.
There are some other cool sites too. I always get a massive chuckle out of http://bringyourchampionstheyreourmeat.blogspot.com/ , also known as BYCTOM.
BYCTOM is not just about Northwestern football. You’ll see writing about the Chicago Cubs, Northwestern Football, the Bears, and hysterically funny and random digressions into all kinds of things, like an oral history of the Northwestern - Illinois rivalry and far too many non-football related things to come to mind.
Northwestern fans also like to make hype videos. The first one I encountered was GO U NU by Mo Greene ten years ago.
There’s also the fine dubstep-infused work of Glopknar, a commenter here who liked to showcase Northwestern trashing Iowa.
And then later on Gloppy celebrated an epic win over Cal with a Top-Gun hype video.
I’ve decided to make a 2018 Northwestern Hype Video. Enjoy!
Caveats:
- I really don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to video editing.
