B1G Talking Points

  • Ohio State. There. We done?
  • Remember when I was talking myself into Penn State for something? Now it might be an at-large bid. We'll see where the Lions wind up tonight when the CFP rankings are released. Until then, Citrus Bowl.
  • With that, Minnesota makes the move to the Rose Bowl. Dear God.
  • The Nittany Lions' tumble means we reshuffle the middle of the conference, including wisconsin's triumphant return to the Outback Bowl. Amazingly, they've only played there once in the last decade--that "wisconsin plays bowl games in Florida" meme dies hard, huh?
  • The Heartland Trophy residing in madison for another year means I see Michigan heading west for the first time in a while, leap-frogging the Hawkeyes in the process.
  • I said it last week: PROJECT INDIANA TO THE GATOR BOWL, YOU COWARDS. And I mean it. Which would you rather have: An enthusiastic Hoosier fanbase or...Iowa? The Hawkeyes travel, but is their heart in another boring-ass game in Florida? Let's all dream of #9WINdiana just a little longer.
  • It actually helps the math, because Indiana isn't technically eligible for the Redbox Bowl, unless numbers have less meaning than I thought they did. So Iowa can head to Santa Clara.
  • WITH THAT WIN: Illinois is bowling! And they're not bowling in Detroit! ...problem is, they're bowling in New York. Outside. In December. Hooray?
  • The Illini jump Michigan State, who--despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth among Sparty faithful--still make a bowl, but slip to the in-state consolation prize.

Other Observations

  • I will believe that a one-loss Pac-12 or Big XII champion beats out a one-loss Alabama team for a tournament owned by SEC Network host ESPN when I see it. Until then, the world remains a terrible and stupid place.
  • The winner of the ACC Coastal (that's the one without Clemson) will be the winner of the Virginia-Virginia Tech game on the last day of the season, and that team goes to the Orange Bowl. Dear God, what a train wreck that conference is.
  • I dropped Boston College out. I don't think you care, but that means I'm taking Pitt to beat them in Chestnut Hill in the season finale. Also in ACC news, I'm pretty sure I just straight-up left bowl-eligible Pitt off these last week. Do a better job of fact-checking me, you idiots. I feel better now. Moving on.
  • With 4-6 Colorado's upset of Stanford, there are realistic Pac-12 scenarios where Stanford (4-5: @Wazzu, vs. Cal, vs. ND); Washington State (4-5: vs. Stanford, vs. Oregon St., @UW); Oregon State (4-5: vs. ASU, @Wazzu, @UO); and Cal (5-4: USC, @Stanford, @UCLA) all miss bowl eligibility. Stanford loses to Wazzu and beats Cal, Wazzu loses out after beating 'Furd, Oregon State beats Wazzu and loses the other two, and Cal loses out. I would enjoy this immensely.
  • Nine games ain't your problem, Big XII: Ranked Kansas State lost. You could knock me over with a feather. Oklahoma played a stupid game at Iowa St. Baylor is a fraud and needed OT to beat TCU. Texas is back until it isn't.
  • In bowl elimination games, TCU and Texas Tech meet in one this Saturday. A TCU win, and the Horned Frogs should sneak it on the last day against West-by-God. A Tech win, and the Red Raiders will need either K-State at home or Texas on the road. We'll give it to TCU for now. Nice little drive across the Metroplex for the Frogs.
  • G5 Auto-Bid: Cincinnati remains until I see reason to remove them; SMU still can't play defense and Memphis might not even be the West representative if Navy keeps it up.
  • My San Jose State Spartans were so close :( but a 42-40 loss to Hawaii means SJSU will stay home unless they can pull off the double at UNLV, then home against Fresno State. But with a win over San Diego State, the Nevada Wolf Pack are bowling, somehow! Welcome.
  • The Charlotte 49ers should beat Old Dominion on the last day and go bowling. What a world we live in. They can play Liberty so I don't have to think about this anymore.
  • WE HAVE ANOTHER ZWEI: Southern Miss stunned UAB with a 37-2 ass-beating. That's all.
  • MACtion watching interests: With their upset of Ohio in the Battle of the Bricks, the Miami Hydroxide Redhawks are one win away from bowl eligibility, somehow, with games against hapless Bowling Green and Akron down the stretch. Chuck Martin's brutal non-conference schedule (and harsh remarks after the 76-5 Ohio State drubbing) of Iowa, Cincy, and Ohio State might have paid off, as the Redhawks have won three consecutive one-score games.
As always, tell me in the comments all the bowl ineligibilities I missed, how I disrespected Penn State this week, and which Mountain West bowl scenario you find most intriguing. Minnesota to the Rose Bowl. Dear God.
