Ope! Didn’t see ya there, Big Ten shootyhoops!
Anywho, a little discussion broke out in the OTE writers’ Slack the other day. Enjoy...
pkloa: Brainstorm session: How can basketball shoes be improved? Shoes seem to already be at Peak Squeak Freq(uency), are there ignored materials that could increase the actual volume?
MNW: I think if they were moon boots.
WSR: I feel like we have the technology to put little megaphones into the heels of shoes.
Stew: I’m all for putting actual squeakers in the soles.
Andrew K: If it results in me not having to hear Dan Dakich anymore, put car alarms in the shoes.
How do you fix basketball shoes?

Iowa Hawkeyes (6-2, KP 38) at #4 Michigan Wolverines (7-1, KP 12)
5:30pm | FS1 | Mich -6.5 | O/U 143.5
Stew: I can’t think of a scenario where Iowa wins this.
CJ Fredrick looks like he’ll be back after missing the Syracuse game. He’s been one of Iowa’s better perimeter defenders and helps the spacing on offense. But it sounds like Cordell Pemsl is probably still out. Can Jordan Bohannon have back to back quality games? Can Luka Garza stay out of foul trouble while getting Jon Teske into foul trouble? These things are going to be necessary for Iowa to even keep the game competitive.
Saturday, December 7
Penn State Nittany Lions (7-1, KP 23) at #6 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-0, KP 2)
11am | BTN
Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-4, KP 147) at Creighton Bluejays (6-2, KP 56)
1:30pm | FS1
Indiana Hoosiers (8-0, KP ) at wisconsin badgers (4-4, KP 60)
3:30pm | BTN
Candystripes: IUBB has never won in the Kohl Center, so either that finally changes this week, or I have yet another streak to annoy the “writers” Slack with for another year or more. IU has looked pretty good so far, and Wisconsin has looked eminently beatable, so we’ll probably lose by double digits, but maybe not.
Illinois Fighting Illini (6-2, KP 20) at #3 Maryland Terrapins (9-0, KP 7)
4pm | ESPN2
BrianB2: Maryland just demoralized KP #57 team Notre Dame at home. This weekend they get KP #45, Illinois. at home. Maryland probably shouldn’t lose, which means they might. Which ever team scores more points will probably be the victor. I am hoping we don’t sleep on Illinois again this year though, or an upset is likely.
DJ Carver: Maryland should win this game. Illinois has not beaten either quality opponent yet despite their roaring comeback against a Top 100 Miami team. Illinois also turns the ball over quite often, so if Maryland continues it’s stifling defensive play this game then they should easily win this one. I’ll be on hand to watch...so don’t fuck it up, Maryland.
Maryland needs this to be a solid win for them. They need to work the shooting kinks out on offense this game and keep the defense going as they’ll play four Top 25 (Kenpom) opponents in their next five after Illinois. If they can go 5-1 or sweep that stretch, it would be fantastic for seeding in March. Hell, the way this year is going the BTT may be a solid Elite 8 preview.
Thump (pre-recorded): We’ll play like shit in the first half, unable to stop them from finishing at the rim, unable to find an open shot and you’ll be able to see that it’s really frustrating. Trailing big at halftime, we’ll fight back playing tough defense and heating up from deep. Incredibly, we’ll have the ball in a one-possession game at some point in the last 8 minutes. But then someone will do a really dumb basketball play to completely blow it at the end and it will have been for nothing. This is Brad Underwood’s identity. This is what we do.

Northwestern Wildcats (4-3, KP 98) at Purdue Boilermakers (5-3, KP 5)
4pm | BTN
Boilerman31: Purdue will look to do bad things to Northwestern. My only fear is a letdown after the blowout win over Virginia. Matt Painter appears to have found some combinations that will work for consistent scoring. I’ll sit back and enjoy the glorified scrimmage.
MNW: Now that’s not fair—no one’s glorifying this shit.
Playing slow-down, wrestle-ball shootyhoops at Mackey is likely going to end in a real back time for the ‘Cats, unless they turn back the clock to 2014 and get an amazing performance out of Drew Crawford while getting A.J. Hammons into foul trouble. And while that theoretically could happen with [/throws dart] Pete Nance and Matt Haarms, I don’t see it as entirely likely.
Welcome to the Big Ten, Ryan Young. Throw some elbows and think of England.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-2, KP 77) at #11 Michigan State Spartans (5-3, KP 4)
6pm | BTN
How efficient will MSU be with the basketball? If the answer is “moderately”, the Spartans will win 80-55. If the answer is “extremely”, the Spartans will win 95-55. If the answer is “barely”, the Spartans will win 65-55. If the answer is “not at all”, the Knights will win 55-52.
Got all that? It’s a nice little window into what to expect ehre.
Here’s your open thread for the weekend in Big Ten basketball. Enjoy, behave, go ‘Cats.
