Big Ten Weekend Basketball Previews and Open Thread

In which you’ll probably miss the best game of the weekend.

NCAA Basketball: Michigan at Penn State
Good thing Michigan doesn’t have any actual basketball fans. Otherwise, I might feel some sympathy for having to cheer for Brazdeikis.
Linsey Fagan-USA TODAY Sports

Happy Weekend! We’ve got one big match-up, a dick-trip chance, a couple of sad games, and a potential beat-em-down. Let’s take a look. All times GTZ.

#24 Maryland Terrapins at #6 Michigan Wolverines

MD: | MI:
11am | FOX | Mich -7 | O/U 127.5

DJ: Maryland travels to Ann Arbor in what appears a must win to keep themselves not only in play for a double bye but also the regular season title. The key to this game is going to be Maryland trying to limit the TO margin while crashing the offensive boards. Michigan is in the bottom 1/3 of D1 teams in offensive boards while Maryland excels, which should provide ample opportunity for second chance points. The X factor this game may be Aaron Wiggins off the bench for Maryland with his ability to drain 3s at will.

I’ll regret saying this but both times Maryland has faced teams who feature pack line defenses they haven’t struggled to score (IU, UVA) so if they can bring the defensive intensity that has seen them rise 30 spots in defensive efficiency the past three weeks they could pull the upset.

Indiana Hoosiers at Minnesota Golden Gophers

IU: | MN:
1pm | ESPN2 | Minn -3.5 | O/U 136

WSR: Who’s going to be more disappointed? Any neutral that has the misfortune of watching the game.

Candy: Indiana’s only win in the last 10 games was an inexplicable overtime win against MSU in Breslin, so clearly going to the Barn is just the tonic Indiana needs to maybe win again. Or not. Honestly, I’m just this side of checked out on this season. Wake me up when the Madness begins.

Penn State Nittany Lions at #12 Purdue Boilermakers

PSU: | Purdue:
3pm | BTN | PU -12.5 | O/U 139.5

Boilerman: Man, what a weird spot this is. Part of me looks at this game and goes, “Oh, well, Penn State will be in a letdown spot.” However, another part of me looks at this game and goes, “What a classic lookahead spot for Purdue (plays at IU this coming week).”

Long story short, I don’t know what to expect from this game. I doubt we see the free throw disparity seen during the last game since it’s in Mackey and not the valley of the OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH bro. I would nothing more than to see Purdue get back to doing Purdue things to teams but Penn State drove us to OT last time, so we shall see.

#21 Iowa Hawkeyes at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

IA: | rut:
5:30pm | FS1 | IA -3| O/U 149

Creighton: I’m always scared. We can beat and/or lose to every single team in the conference with only the mildest amount of surprise. I guess I should be happy that the winning part happens more often. The curse of not playing defense.

The formula against Rutgers is pretty simple. I don’t think it’s too much to ask to contain Geo Baker and get Eugene Omoruyi into foul trouble. I think Iowa has too much depth for anyone outside of those two guys to be much of a factor for Rutgers. Do that and the Hawks should win easily, and since nothing with this team ever wants to be easy that means it’s going to be a back and forth game where we never lead by double digits because everyone is still feeling good about not losing to Northwestern. This is fun. I’m having fun. WE’RE ALL HAVING FUN HERE.

Zuzu: Well it’s a home game, yet _another_ sellout, and the fans are riding HIGH for the which seriously helps make the RAC one of the most formidable places to play an away game. I think Rutgers can get it done so long as ego doesn’t get in the way and for the love of God attack the rim and make your gd free throws.

Northwestern Wildcats at Nebraska Cornhuskers

jNW: | UNL:
7:30pm | BTN | UNL -5 | O/U 130

MNW: I will be watching a D-III women’s hockey game and decidedly not watching this basketball game. OK, maybe just a quick check of my phone to see what the score is-----oh fuck I regret that.

I expect the combined FG% to be under 40, there to be at least 20 missed threes between the two teams, and Tim Miles and Chris Collins to share an overly-long hug in the postgame handshake line, with the winner patting the loser on the right shoulder for an excessively-long time while telling him something to the effect of “Things are bad now, but these guys look great. You’ve got ‘em on the right track.”

They don’t, and they aren’t.

Ohio State Buckeyes at #11 Michigan State Spartans

12 pm | CBS | UNL -a LOT | O/U TBD

Ansrew Very Eastern Europea name: I mean MSU should be able to handle OSU no problem, but they’ve already choked on this conference’s gristle twice. Nick Ward seemed to have resolved his psychological beef with OSU in the last game against them, so if he and his frontcourt fellows can get OSU’s very shallow group of bigs in foul trouble, MSU should be able to feast inside. Keep Kaleb Wesson under 30, and I don’t see how else OSU scores enough points to win this one.
