FIRST TO 50 WINS: Big Ten Basketball Weekend Open Thread

LET’S SEE HOW LONG WE CAN GO WITHOUT BREAKING THE REFEREE RULE

NCAA Basketball: Michigan at Wisconsin Mary Langenfeld-USA TODAY Sports

Hi! After my mild meltdown yesterday about how if you’re one of those people gumming up whole game-threads and post-games with your Assembly Hall no-call conspiracy theories or Zapruder-level screengrabs of a shoelace over the sideline, let’s try some basketball again.

Things are heating up in the world of Big Ten hoops, as most bracketology outlets have anywhere from 7 to 9 teams in the NCAA Tournament. More teams’ hearts could be broken this weekend! Let’s go see whose those could be:

Saturday

#19 Wisconsin Badgers at #7 Michigan Wolverines

wi: 17-6, 9-3 (NET 12) || MI: 21-2, 10-2 (NET 6)
11am | FOX | Mich -6.5 | O/U 120.5

beezer07: Wisconsin faces its toughest remaining pre-Elite Eight game this weekend, having to travel to play yet another good defensive team in what’s actually super important re: the conference championship!

Hopefully Wisconsin wins big, all your favorite teams lose, and your internalized Brad Davison/refs butthurt causes you to get diarrhea.

Prediction is Michigan by 8-10.

MNW: I’m actually curious if you think there is nothing wrong with what we have seen Davison doing, or if it’s just part of the bit.

beez: I think he’s def had a couple dirty plays this season, but the hysteria around here about him since last season is fucking embarrassing and absurd.

So it’s the latter. Think of it as the corollary to “lol flopsconsin”.

Minnesota Golden Gophers at #9 Michigan State Spartans

MN: 16-7, 6-6 (NET 54) || MSU: 18-5, 9-3 (NET 9)
1pm | ESPN | MSU -13 | O/U 143.5

WhiteSpeedReceiver: Grayson Allen and Brad Davison won’t be playing against Minnesota this weekend, so I highly doubt there will be any shitbaggery or blatant attempts to injure opponents.

I mean, we play at Breslin tomorrow. So we’re going to get beat up and we’re probably going to get screwed by the refs, but I can tolerate that because you know coming in that it’s going to be physical and you can always see the elbow and forearms and hip checks coming at you. And Breslin and Mackey are places you should get screwed a little by the refs because they’ve been great programs for a very long time.

But it’s still going to suck when there’s some glimmer of hope of pulling out the win in the 2nd half that’s snuffed out by a questionable foul on a clean block from Daniel Oturu.

Our friend Thump has already taken you on a nice little walk down memory lane in this storied rivalry. Suffice it to say that’ll do for our coverage of this shitshow.

Boilerman31: The Boilermaker Pain Train keeps on a-rollin’. Sorry, Nebrasketball fans. I like your program, I like your coach, but now you must die again.

Look for Carsen Edwards to get his, add in some Ryan Cline 3’s, and sprinkle some Trevion Williams in the post. Sounds like a delicious recipe for fun.

This one almost has the feel of a mini-play-in game: Winner hops onto a 9-line for the time being, loser starts showing up in “First Four Out” on the regular. Seem fair?

NU: 12-10, 3-8 (NET 73) || IA: 18-5, 7-5 (NET 23)
5:30pm | BTN

MNW: I want to die.

Stewmonkey13: Thanks for that lead in, MNW. Iowa is hosting jNW on Sunday.

I expect a bit of a letdown after the wins against Indiana and Michigan, but even with a letdown the Iowa cagers should be able to handle NW. Iowa should be able to abuse the Wildcats in the patient with Luka Garza and Tyler Cook likely to cause serious foul problems on Dererk Pardon. It’s likely the easiest game left on the schedule, so hopefully it’s fairly stress free.

Creighton M: Stew jinxed it and we’re definitely blowing a 20 point lead.

MNW: Well, thanks to the eternal generosity of Cornshoe (aka Hawkeye Elvis), I will now watch this blowout in person, then turn right around and drive back to the Twin Cities. Hooray!
