There’s now enough inter-connectivity between teams to have the full algorithm implemented.
Ratings and Ranks:
B1G Thoughts:
- Oh, thank god, some sort of normal order to the universe is restored, as Ohio State Buckeyes overtake wisconsin.
- Penn State gets a decent SoS bump during a bye, while Iowa does the opposite.
- Michigan State is a pretty good team. They’re fans are just incredibly awful.
- Oh, hey, speaking of incredibly awful fans that still have a pretty good team, it’s the Michigan Wolverines.
- Maryland Terrapins are a football team. That’s it, that’s all I got.
- Indiana, look at you. A perfectly ok team. Good Job!
- UNL is an insane team. Why the hell even screw around with accused sexual criminal, Maurice Washington when Wandale Robinson is right there?!
- Minnesota is not the worst undefeated team in the country, they’re the 2nd worst. Though, UAB should get an auto-bump just because they’re awesome.
- Oh, Illinois, that sucked. I’m sorry. But mostly just because I like Thump and hate UNL.
- Nope, not going to talk about rutger.
- jNW are the same team they were last year. Fight me.
- Purdue can’t really be this bad, right?!? I mean, they can, I guess.
Other Thoughts:
- And a giant portion of the Auburn fans still want Gus Malzahn fired.
- Boise State right back in familiar territory as the top rated G5 team.
- Navy has only played 2 games, so this is a bit of a small sample size thing.
- SMU! Let those Mustangs run! Still not sure why Sonny Dykes didn’t work at Cal.
- UMass is very special type of bad.
Movement:
- Oh, Wazzou, that was a very, VERY, bad loss.
- Baylor, that was a very bad win.
- Temple going out of their way to ruin Maryland’s season by losing to a bad Buffalo team.
- Dropping 72 points is a good way to bounce back after that crussing El Assico loss, Iowa State.
- Oh, hey, there’s that Buffalo team.
Rating Groups:
As you can see, I’ve color coded the rankings. What I’ve done is calculated the mean (35.64) and standard deviation (21.95) of the ratings. Then broke the teams up according to how many standard deviations from the mean they are. I like to think of these groups as Elite, Good, Ok, Not Ok, Bad, and Trash. It’s got a pretty nice normal distribution, and that makes me happy.

Yes, this makes sense and is a good way to organize the data.

No, I’m a neanderthal who just cares about arbitrary ordinal cutoffs, like top 25 teams.
