"I wish to acknowledge the land on which we stand today."

Sitting in the back of the classroom as TA for Intro to American History, I stopped craning my neck to take attendance and fixed my gaze on the front of the classroom. This was certainly not the standard "Welcome to my class" speech I had heard the last two years as I worked for various faculty.

"We stand on the ancestral land of, among nations, the Ho-Chunk, the Potawatomi..."

Students began to visibly shift in their seats, uncomfortable at the simple, 30-second list of Native nations that they knew, instinctively, would end in...

"...land that was taken from them in with the federal government, each broken in succession."

For students from a predominantly white, middle class, often religiously educated background in the Chicago land area, it was an uncomfortable truth to be confronted with on Day One, even if it's a truth they already knew. Whether Waunakee (the pleasant valley), Menomonie (wild rice), Chicago (some bastardization of "onion”), or the Algonquin for "the good land", many of them had tacitly acknowledged Native occupation in place names, monuments, and, yes, a sports team named for a Sac chief.

Monday was Indigenous People’s Day. We live in an era in which protestors are toppling statues of Christopher Columbus—thus requiring me, as a history professor, to never teach about Columbus again because that history is erased—just a few miles from my house and Indigenous groups—including my lieutenant governor, Peggy Flanagan—are calling new attention to the atrocities and injustices inflicted upon Native Americans throughout the centuries of American history.

But it’s getting people to acknowledge that those facts are baked into U.S. history—they’re not a “revision” or an “emphasis”, they’re part and parcel of the American experience—that remains tough.

I apologize for not being able to dive into this; I am behind on this and late for a trip to North Dakota (yes, seriously), so I have to leave you with a mapping project to occupy yourselves today:

This is Invasion of America, a project directed by Claudio Saunt at the University of Georgia. This interactive map allows you to click on the various parcels of U.S. territory as they were ceded to the federal government from 1776 to 1900. I encourage you to click on the parcel nearest you. Drill down and read the treaty. See the promises unkept.

Acknowledge the land and its people.

I’m not saying rank the Bobcats...
