B1G Week 2 Picks and Predictions

When the most exciting game is Iowa-Northwestern, you know you’re in trouble.

NCAA Football: Penn State at Ohio State Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

By some miracle, there will be six out of a possible seven Big Ten football games this week.

We’ve got previews, podcasts, and p’infographics for you, if you’d like to go into these Very Serious and Incredibly Monitored polls informed about the picks and how we made them:

All times CT, all picks very serious. Don’t at me.

Friday, October 30

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Maryland Terrapins

6:30pm | ESPN | Minn -20.5 | O/U 60.5

Straight-Up: Minnesota, 13-0
Against the Spread: Minnesota, 9-4

Jesse: I have not written anything useful regarding picks in at least three years, but I went 100% ATS last week and just told the entire slack channel I would riot without recognition. Also, I will now not make a correct pick the entire year. Minnesota wins + covers. Fun prop bet nobody is asking for? Minnesota gets 2.5 specialists back, to which I’m taking the under.

pkloa: Locksley and Maryland are incredibly bad at football, Minnesota rights the HMS Rowboat.

Bman31: What is there to be said about this game? Not much. Too many points on the road for my liking. Gophers begin to right the boat but Terps find a way to cover.

MNW: I’m with Boilerman on the “too many points to be comfortable” boat. While Maryland is bad, I think we saw the worst kind of Maryland—and maybe the last of Taulia Tagovailoa as the full-time QB for Lance Legendre—last Saturday. Put a depleted Minnesota squad on a short week and on the road, throw in a missed field goal or something for good measure, and add the defense we saw last week.

Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines

11am | FOX | Mich -25.5 | O/U 53.5

Straight-Up: Michigan, 12-1
Against the Spread: Michigan State, 9-4

Jesse: I actually don’t think Michigan State is the worst team in the conference, but fumble the ball threeve times and here you are. Conversely, I don’t think Michigan is ACTUALLY almost four scores better than Sparty. So let’s say Michigan wins and Sparty covers.

Bman31: There’s something about sports betting that always fascinates me. First and foremost is the classic overreaction to what happens on Week 1. This one is really hard to fight. Michigan was a cover machine at home last year but 25.5 is a huge number. Wolverines win, Sparty goes little brother and finds a way to a backdoor cover.

MNW: God, I didn’t even think about how the Michigan hype is going to be even worse than usual if they can get a couple wins over teams that have at least some national recognition. When’s it the Ohio State game so this bubble can pop? Wolverines, 38-14.

Purdue Boilermakers at Illinois Fighting Illini

11am | BTN | Purdue -7.5 | O/U 59.5

Straight-Up: Purdue, 12-1
Against the Spread: Purdue, 10-3

Jesse: Uh, I think Purdue is probably at least 8 points better than Illinois and if that secondary plays as poorly against the Boilers as they did against Wisconsin, it’s going to get super ugly. So Purdue with the win / cover.

Bman31: Fun little factoid, the road team in this series has only lost once dating back to 2012 (Illinois in 2017). Look for that fun little trend to continue, Rondale or not. Boilers win. The hook concerns me but also going to go with the cover.

MNW: I said it in DWT;WT, and I’ll say it again—the West is going to be a COVIDy crab bucket, and Purdue cannot be allowed to escape. Illini, 31-27.

Northwestern Wildcats at Iowa Hawkeyes

2:30pm | ESPN | Iowa -2.5 | O/U 48.5

Straight-Up/ATS: Iowa, 7-6

Jesse: This one is fun because it’s similar to the previous game. What do you make of Northwestern’s offense? Is it just super duper awesome and its defense is going to be shutdown? Or is Maryland terrible? We have no reference points yet. At the same time, Iowa maybe lost to a good Purdue team barely. I dunno, let’s go with Northwestern.

Bman31: How good is Northwestern after beating up on a very bad Maryland team? This one should be a sneaky good game. I like Iowa to bounce back and since we’re under 3, I’ll take ‘em to cover as well.

MNW: 17-10 or 10-17, it doesn’t really matter—no one’s going to be really happy unless Northwestern wins. A field goal kicking contest goes the way of the team with Kissin’ Keith Duncan. Iowa, 16-13.

#17 Indiana Hoosiers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

2:30pm | BTN | IU -11.5 | O/U 54.5

Straight-Up: Indiana, 13-0
Against the Spread: Indiana, 7-6

Jesse: That line seems high for Indiana. I don’t think Rutgers is better than Indiana, but I also have yet to see Indiana consistently handle success in football. Hoosiers win, Rutgers covers.

Bman31: Indiana got their big win over a ranked team. Now comes the letdown. The problem? Rutgers might look competitive. Also, Rutgers was decent ATS last year at home. Give me Indiana to win but Rutgers gets the cover.

MNW: This is truly a tough one.

Do I pick the team that got out-gained roughly 500-200 and needed three turnovers, three missed field goals, and five other complete brain meltdowns—or the one that needed 7 turnovers to win a game by two scores against a first-game head coach and tire-fire of a program?

Seems like middlin’ ground, though I should think standard deviation his high here, because who the hell knows if these teams are actually decent? Penix > Vedral, ultimately. Hoosiers, 21-10.

#3 Ohio State Buckeyes at #18 Penn State Nittany Lions

6:30pm | ABC | OSU -12.5 | O/U 62.5

Straight-Up: Ohio State, 12-1
Against the Spread: Ohio State, 9-4

Jesse: Ohio State wins and covers because everything is meaningless.

pkloa: Got em right where we want em, Nittany Lions win by 7.

Bman31: /Imperial March plays as the Buckeye Death Star rolls into formerly Happy Valley.

MNW: You could not convince me to care less. Ohio State, 45-21.

The standings right now are a little off—we’re working on an improvement spreadsheet to show our picks. We do need to mention, though, that Jesse Collins went 7-0 ATS last week. So congrats to Jesse.
