Where We Be, What We Be Drinking: Week 7

How many beers does it take to get through watching Rutgers-Northwestern?

Hey everyone, welcome back to your favorite weekly segment about OTE “writers” drinking things and being places: Where We Be, What We Be Drinking

This week we’ve got the battle for the $5 Bits of Broken Chair, Wisconsin disrespecting the troops, and maybe even a Purdue Harbor (calling it now).

What’s everyone doing tomorrow:

Creighton

My friend is trying out his new smoker this weekend, so I’m going to watch the game over at his house. I’ll probably bring over some pumpkin beers or something seasonal from Toppling Goliath, and a bottle of something from Cedar Ridge distillery (either the rye or the bottled-in-bond bourbon) because I don’t remember it being a thing when I moved away from Iowa and now that I’m back I’d like to try some of the local whisky.

HELLO, EVANSTON! My, you look just as stupid as you used to. Did you put on weight during the pandemic?

I’m back, Ryan Field. It’s Homecoming, and I can think of no better way to spend my time amid a pandemic than flying to Chicago after all my time in Houston to watch the ‘Cats lose to Rutgers. HOORAY!

Tentative plans are being made to get in tailgates for both those #lakeviewz for the ‘gram AND the NUMBAlums soiree in the lots around Ryan Field. Beer/snacks for the lake tailgate are nice and simple because none of us wants to do work — a case of some cheap’n’shitty, some donuts or other breakfast accouterments, and how’d that bottle of Malort fall off the store shelf and into my bag? We’ll throw bags, toast to seeing each other for the first time in two years, and then take in the glory of 11am at Ryan Field.

Green Akers

I will be home in Detroitland again, ideally able to get out there and futz at the yard work for a bit between MSU and Thumpasaurus’ band gig (still need the time and place there bud). I should definitely clean the grill before the weather turns, as well. OR! Or. I could just use it again on this supply of pork tenderloin that mysteriously made its way into the meat drawer. How that happened, we’ll never know.

BuffKomodo

I will be traveling on up to the Findlay, OH area for the weekend. The wife has a cousin getting married Putnam County style, so all things considered, it’ll be a good time. Since the wedding tips off at 1 and this is the long version of a catholic wedding, I will no doubt be watching games on my phone with a wireless beat in. As for the choice of beverage, it’s going to be limited to shitty lite college beer because…well….that’s the clientele. I may sneak in a sixer of something good, but odds are I’ll just take the free beer and shut up.

Despite taking almost every precaution we could, one of our kids just tested positive for COVID. So we’re going no where and seeing no one for a while, which really isn’t all the different. But also takes out parks and other activities where we may come in contact with anyone else. I hate everyone and everything.

Beezer

I’m getting married in Blairs, Virginia and hating the troops by both rooting against Army and not watching them play. Drinking White Zombie, Sweetwater 420, and probably some bourbon or champagne or whatever I’m handed.

[editor’s note: everyone congratulate Beez in the comments and maybe he’ll save us some cake]

Misdreavus

Penn State doesn’t play this weekend, so I’ll be catching glimpses of games as I tend to all the responsibilities I’ve been putting off since the season started.

BoilerUp

Have out of town relatives coming in to Cincinnati this weekend so I’ll be hanging out with my siblings, nephews, niece, parents, a couple of uncles and aunts and a cousin. Going to do a family Oktoberfest one of the days so I’ll be drinking whatever german beer I pick up to share on Friday.

Townie

BYE WEEK! I’ll be honey doing all weekend in North FL. Maybe some surf fishing, as the fall bait run is in full swing.

RU in VA

Four kids’ soccer games all local to my house. It’s a miracle. I picked up some salted vodka rib glaze from Horrocks market outside of Lansing last weekend, so I might use that on a few racks of ribs Sunday in the vertical smoker. I have made a nice 7% pumpkin ale with cranberry, cloves, nutmeg, and vanilla and a Bell’s Two Hearted IPA clone, but I’m not sure they’ll be fully carbonated and rested by the weekend. I guess we’ll see what comes out of the tap on Saturday.

Brian GIllis

Michigan has an off week and so do I. So in lieu of airports this weekend, I’ll be laying low at home in Los Angeles … contemplating how five Big Ten teams can ranked in the top ten.

Pkloa

I’m going back out hiking in the morning, really been enjoying nature. Since your Nittany Lions are OFO, I’ll probably try to knock out a chore or two around the house before settling in for some half hearted football spectating.

Dead Read

Lounging in lovely downtown Lincoln.

BigRedTwice

I’ll be in Lincoln/Omaha! Hopefully watching the game with my brother’s family, then on to a family wedding (ft. a drag queen? I’m very excited) in the evening.

GoForThree

I’ll making my way across England in Range Rover Autobiography, with a couple old dogs in the back, in search of something to do since the noon games don’t start until 5 PM here. Then I’ll be in my bed, football and drinking a nice Lincoln Lager I picked up last week in—wait for it—Lincoln (the one in Lincolnshire with the 1,000 year old Anglican cathedral, not the one in Nebraska with all the Lutherans). Oh, and as a successful management consultant who helps firms win in global markets, I have one message to all the American workers out there going on strike this week: Fuck the suits. Don’t give ‘em a goddam inch. You have the power now.

Now that you know where we’ll be at, go down to the comments and share what you’re doing this weekend, and also make fun of Beez for getting married during football season. Happy Striketober to the UAW workers at John Deere!
