Big Ten Basketball Midweek Previews

A Top 10 showdown in Ohio State-Iowa...and also Minnesota-Rutgers, I guess.

You guys wanna see a dead body?

Or maybe, like two or three?

Cratering Michigan State headed to Iowa and fell to the Hawkeyes while wisconsin took revenge on Penn State at home. But somehow Maryland snuck out yet another win over a ranked team. And this one was even at home!

Thankfully, BoilerBettor has given you a soundtrack—and rankings!—to enjoy as you survey the Big Ten basketball landscape:

Tonight, we turn to Iowa City—again!—and Piscataway to see which of the Top 10 contenders are for real, and whether Rutgers or Minnesota can get out of their own way.

Big Ten Basketball Previews

Tuesday, February 2

#24 Purdue Boilermakers at Maryland Terrapins

5:30pm | BTN | MD -2.5 | O/U 134.5

BrianB2: As I write this, the spread is currently even...and we are playing at “home”, soooooo, gonna be an ugly loss for Maryland I imagine.

Michigan State Spartans at #8 Iowa Hawkeyes

6pm | FS1 | Iowa -9.5 | O/U 154.5

Andrew K: Much as I’d love to hype this game, it’ll be embarrassing for Iowa if MSU keeps it within 30. They have no one who can even slow Luka Garza down, and also have no one who can reliably hit a shot. These seem to be negative signs for the ol’ Spartans.

A line so large we get to both offer three choices AND laugh at Michigan State:

#12 Illinois Fighting Illini at Indiana Hoosiers

8pm | ESPN | Illinois -2 | O/U 141.5

Thump: In tonight’s podcast, Andrew asked me if I thought Kofi Cockburn could knock Trayce Jackson-Davis out for first team all-Big Ten. Well...let’s see!

I just want to watch more Andre Curbelo. If you think there’s a more objectively entertaining Big Ten basketball player active right now as far as how fun it is to watch him play, then (a) you’re wrong (b) i’m all ears.

Candystripes: Here’s what to expect from Indiana this game: If TJD does well and at least one other Hoosier also does well, we might win. If fewer than 2 Hoosiers have a good offensive night, we probably lose. Beyond that? I have no idea.

Thursday, February 4

{WBB} wisconsin at #7 Maryland

3pm | BTN

{WBB} Iowa at #14 Ohio State

5pm | BTN

Hot off Ohio State’s loss at valiant and rising Northwestern, in which the ‘Cats defense stymied the Buckeyes guards, here’s a bounce-back opportunity for Ohio State. Iowa will get theirs with Caitlin Clark, and Monica Czinano will test the Buckeyes’ front line of Aaliyah Patty and Dorka Juhasz, but I like this to be a high-scoring mess regardless.

{WBB} Nebraska at Penn State

5pm | BTN+

#7 Ohio State Buckeyes at #8 Iowa

6pm | ESPN

So Ohio State is ranked 7th. Huh.

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

8pm | FS1

WSR: Now we find out if the Gophers are OK but in a swoon or bad. Losing at the RAC would be horrible, which means it’ll happen. It’s not exactly been a wonderful place for Pitino to visit over the years, and I’d really like him to start making strives to better himself.
