Week 2 Big Ten Preview

Michigan State vs Youngstown State 12PM (BTN)

After a surprising offensive start in week 1 MSU looks to continue and avoid a letdown against Youngstown State. Shouldn’t be much of an issue for the Spartans as Mel Tucker will start 2-0 in his second season at the helm. The offense should carry the load against a Penguins defense that gave up 41 points to Incarnate Word in week 1. Kenny Walker will look to continue from his breakout performance against Northwestern and lead MSU again.

Prediction- MSU-38 Youngstown State-10

Illinois vs Virginia 11AM (ACCN)

Last week was a rough one for new Illinois Coach Bret Bielema with a home loss to UTSA. Now they face a tougher opponent in Virginia. Coming off a 43-0 victory over William and Mary the Cavaliers will pose a much more difficult task for Coach Bielema to get his second win. Brennan Armstrong should have another strong outing again a team that gave up 37 points and over 400 total years a week ago. Its been a tale of two weeks for the Illini. If we see the team from week 0 that beat Nebraska they may be able to pull of the upset on the road. The offense has looked good so far but the defense has struggled. Overall I think it will be a close game but there are to many question marks on defense.

Predation- Virginia-35 Illinois-31

Minnesota vs Miami (OH) 12PM (ESPNU)

We saw a lot of good things last week for Minnesota again Ohio State in week 1 that should carry over against a Miami team that went 7-2 last season in MAC play. Tanner Morgan shouldn’t have to much trouble and the running game behind Mohamed Ibrahim should carry the load. Minnesota will rebound easily in week 2 and get the Gophers first win of the year.

Prediction- Minnestoa-34 Miami (OH)-14

Northwestern vs Indiana State 12PM (BTN)

The Wildcats got GASHED last week against Michigan State on the ground. Week 2 should pose less of a threat for NW however with FCS opponent Indiana State. Senior Hunter Johnson was one of the few bright spots last week throwing for 283 years and 3 touchdowns. Last week was rough but Northwestern shouldn’t have much trouble with the Sycamores.

Prediction- Northwestern-28 Indiana State-3

Penn State vs Ball State 3:30 (FS1)

Penn State is a 22 point favorite but I would expect even more from the Nittany Lions. They got off to a slow start last week against Wisconsin but the defense looked strong and the offense should find their way against Ball State. Even with a big matchup against Auburn looming next week I expect Penn State not to be looking ahead and be ready to go. This one should be over pretty early and they will move on to a big matchup next week 2-0.

Prediction- Penn State-38 Ball State-7

Ohio State vs Oregon 12PM (Fox)

Not a fan of the Fox Big Noon Kickoff. This should be a primetime game and the advantage defiantly falls to Ohio State playing at noon against a west coast team. C.J. Stroud had some early growing pains but ended up throwing for 294 and 4 touchdown and the rest of the offense got going quickly and put up 45 points. Oregon, who is a favorite in the Pac 12 once again, struggled against Fresno State. I expect some of that was looking ahead to this week and Oregon will come ready to compete. Ultimately the Buckeyes are just to talented and playing at the Horseshoe is a difficult task for any team.

Prediction- Ohio State-27 Oregon-17

Michigan vs Washington 8PM (ABC)

One of the big problems that has faced Michigan in the Jim Harbaugh era has been in consist play at the quarterback position. Is Cade McNamara the guy for the Wolverines? I think its still to early to tell because we have seen this play out before just last year with Joe Milton (now with Tennessee). He only threw 11 times last week against Western Michigan so I’m sure we will see more against the Huskies. Blake Corum led the offense rushing for 111 yards and 2 receptions with 2 total touchdowns as well as looking good on special teams. Washington looked dead offensively last week and look for Freshman Sam Huard to possibly see some action.

Prediction- Michigan-24 Washington-17

Iowa vs Iowa State 4:30PM (ABC)

Iowa easily handled an Indiana team who came into the season with a lot of hype. Iowa State struggled with FCS Northern Iowa. This is a great rivalry game that is typically overlooked. This season both teams come into the week 2 matchup as top 10 teams. Both defenses played a strong game last week and I expect the same for this game. Senior Brock Purdy and Junior Breece Hall lead the Cyclones offense against a defense that picked off Micheal Penix 3 times. This should be a grind it out game but I think the experience on offense will lead the Cyclones to a big top 10 victory.

Prediction- Iowa State-20 Iowa-17
