2023 B1G ATS: Week 9

Did He or Didn't He? (Rob Howe/HN)

Sometimes the margin of victory is razor thin (or even non-existent). Like Wisconsin's comeback against Illinois; enough to get a 25-21 win, but not enough to cover the four-and-a-half. Or Curtis Jacobs apparent scoop-and-score, that vanished due to a continuing Big Ten conspiracy against Penn State defensive holding call. Or Iowa's 127 total yards of offense almost holding up against Minnesota until Cooper DeJean swatted at a fly called for a fair catch.

And then there's Michigan over Michigan State, and Rutgers over Indiana!

Five games are offered up this week; as Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Rutgers have their bye weeks. Included among the games are Ohio State taking an interesting trip to Madison; along with Penn State and Indiana reliving the razor-thin margin in the 2020 season opener.

Trivia Question - Which of these teams owns the most recent win over an AP Top 5 team: Indiana, Maryland, Northwestern, or Rutgers?

The updated standings are also offered, with a correction to griffcat (thank for pointing out my faux pas). Somehow, someway I managed a very unusual 5-1 (thank you Iowa for wrecking 6-0 for me!). And welcome aboard ofboucke.

Nothing razor-thin about these picks:

Ohio State at Wisconsin (+13.5): my pick - Wiscy. The Buckeyes make their first trip to Madison since 2016; where the Badgers manage to keep things uncomfortably close for the Scarlet and Grey. Since John Cooper was run out of town, Ohio State at Wisconsin has produced the following scores: 19-14 aOSU (2002), 24-13 Wiscy (2004), 20-17 aOSU (2008), 31-18 Wiscy (2010), 21-14 aOSU (2012), and 30-23 aOSU (2016). The trend continues as THE Ohio State University eeks out a win. Take the Badgers and the points in this one.

Maryland at Northwestern (+13): my pick - jTarpwestern. This looks like a Maryland auto-win; but then again so did the Illinois game 2 weeks ago. With a 70% chance of rain in Evanston, I have a feeling this will be a repeat of last season's affair in College Park; with the game coming down to the last possession. This thing will be close, making my continued participation in the Survivor Pool's Loser Bracket quite precarious. The PurpleCats beat the spread in this thing.

Michigan State at Minnesota (-7): my pick - Row Row Row Your Boat. Minnesota seems to be due for a letdown after winning in Iowa City for the first time this millennium However, they have an anti-letdown opponent on their schedule. MAMU makes their first trip to Minneapolis in 6 years, and will return to East Lansing on the wrong end of a straight-up and ATS loss.

Indiana at Penn State (-30.5): my pick - Penn State. The Nittany Lions will be licking their wounds after last week's trip to Columbus. That's no bueno for the Crimson and Cream. Penn State puts this thing away late in the second quarter and doesn't look back. This game could very well be a blowout.

Purdue at Nebraska (-3): my pick - The Children of the Corn. This is game 2 of a 3-game stretch that Nebraska needs to sweep if they plan on participating in a bowl game. The Cornhuskers get this one (and next week in East Lansing) before a tough finishing stretch of Maryland, at wisconsin, and Iowa. Nebraska wins and covers the points.

Rutgers.

On October 18, 2007 Rutgers defeated #2 ranked South Florida 30-27. On October 30, 2004 Maryland defeated #5 ranked Florida State 20-17. On October 3, 1959 Northwestern defeated #5 ranked Iowa 14-10. Indiana has never beaten a team ranked in the AP Top 5.
