Off Tackle Open Threads: November 28th Basketball

We’re doing the Lord’s work tonight

NCAA Basketball: Alcorn State at Michigan State
Tonight’s your night, son. Don’t embarrass the family
Dale Young-USA TODAY Sports

Rutgers Scarlet Knights 71, St. Peter’s Peacocks 40

BoilerUp89: St. Peter’s committed 27 fouls but Rutgers converted 23 of their 32 free throws. The Peacocks shot 23.6% from the field, 15.8% from three, and just 52.4% from the charity stripe.

Wisconsin Badgers 71, Western Illinois Leathernecks 49

BoilerUp89: This is a game that happened. Wisconsin won.

Northwestern Wildcats 89, Northern Illinois Huskies 67

BoilerUp89: The cats and dogs were fighting for a half, but Northwestern pulled away in the 2nd half. Boo Buie had 23 points to lead the Wildcats. Xavier Amos of the Huskies outscored him with 26.

#302 Georgia Southern Eagles at #15 Michigan State Spartans, 5:30 pm, BTN

MaximumSam: The opponents tonight are a combined 1-16 so, uh, well there’s that. Georgia Southern rolls in at 0-6, has played no one in the top 100, and lost all their games by double digits except for one, against Kennesaw State. Their leading scorer is combo guard Deuce Dean, so at least he’s got a cool name, even though he’s only shooting 37% on deuces. They do take almost 30 threes a game, so be prepared for a lot of long rebounds. Torvik goes Sparty, 83-59.

BoilerUp89: Georgia Southern shoots a lot of threes (over 50% of their field goal attempts). Perhaps they get hot and keep this within 20. The Eagles head coach is Charlie Henry, a former assistant of Fred Hoiberg at Iowa State. Henry is also a Michigan native - he played for four years at Madonna University.

#254 Rider Broncs at #59 Maryland Terrapins, 6 pm

MaximumSam: Rider possesses the one win of the group, against the Mighty Macs of Division 3 Immaculata University. They already sport a 14 point loss to Nebraska and have some of the worst shooting splits I’ve seen. They rank 346th in free throw percentage, 353rd on twos, and 353nd on threes. Not sure they can score against an empty gym. Torvik goes Maryland, 74-58.

BoilerUp89: Is Nebraska 15 points better than Maryland? That’s what we will have to see if Rider is to pull off the upset. And just because Rider’s effective field goal percentage is 362nd in Division 1 this season is no reason to think they can’t shoot.

#230 Texas Southern Tigers at #1 Purdue Boilermakers, 7:30 pm, BTN

MaximumSam: Another 0-6 team, though one that has played a much tougher schedule than Georgia Southern. They also have Shaq’s son, Shaqir, who has scored 17 points all season. Good luck with Purdue. Torvik goes Boilers, 82-57.

BoilerUp89: I wonder if there will be a graphic comparing Shaq to Zach. Rider may have the worst effective shooting percentage, but Texas Southern isn’t much better. They sit at 361st in Division 1. Both Texas Southern and Purdue were victims of FDU during the last NCAA tournament.
