How to Watch Gator Bowl, Sun Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Cotton Bowl: Time, TV, Picks, Previews, Open Thread

From a Liberty Bowl rematch to awarding the 2023 Joey Julius-Rafael Gaglianone Award for Beeftankery in Kicking, we’ve got your Friday bowl game previews.

I’ll be honest: this one kind of got away from us.

We’ve got picks, previews, random facts, and more for everything today from Ohio State vs. Missouri in the Cotton Bowl Classic to...well, everything in between.

#22 Clemson Tigers vs. Kentucky Wildcats

Gator Bowl: EverBank Stadium (Jacksonville, FL)
11am | ESPN | Clemson -4 | O/U 44.5

Kind of...: These teams have met three times previously in bowl matchups. Clemson has won two of the three, and all were one score games. I have no idea if any of this matters, but I refuse to say anything about Clemson at present.

MNW: That makes me feel slightly better, because I looked at this matchup and thought “Didn’t we just do this?”

Now, these two teams haven’t actually played in a bowl game since 2009, but it feels like they have, and somehow that’s even worse. But presumably Kentucky’s coming into this game a little more prepared than they were last year against Iowa—sorry, I’ll be more specific, since Kentucky and Iowa played in two 2022 bowl games; than they were against Iowa in the Music City Bowl—when they didn’t bother to bring a quarterback along and the one they started through two picks-six.

Also, I wish to register a complaint about how many games today have point totals like NFL games. Give me more Oklahoma-Arizona, not this nonsense.

#19 Oregon State Beavers vs. #16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Sun Bowl (El Paso, TX)
1pm | CBS | ND -6 | O/U 41.5

MNW: While it’s never ideal to have to watch Notre Dame football, you do love those bowl games held on CBS or FOX, because they start staggered from the ESPN window and give you something for during the timeouts and halftime.

Kind of...: Given that Oregon State lost their coach, starting QB, and numerous other players, the line seems light to me. Oregon State leads the all-time series 2-0, both in bowl games. The first, in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl, led to a 41-9 Beaver victory, one of the greatest moments in college football history. Breathe it in:

We can only hope the CFB gods haven’t lost their sense of humor.

MNW: Jesus LORD that Oregon State team. Idaho legend Dennis Erickson. Jonathan Smith throwing the ball, of course, but to both Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh. The Beavs just stuffing the Irish in a trash can where they belong for hours.

Please, please, please.

Anyway, you seen the Irish? No way they can handle the sun. 10 minutes out in that stuff and they’re the color of a tomato.

Side note: How has Notre Dame never gotten an invitation to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl?

Memphis Tigers vs. Iowa State Cyclones

Liberty Bowl (Memphis, TN)
2:30pm | ESPN | ISU -10.5 | O/U 57.5

Kind of...: The lone previous meeting between these two teams was in the 2017 Liberty Bowl, a 21-20 win for the Cyclones.

Let’s talk about Iowa State’s last game, a 42-35 road win over Kansas State in blizzard conditions. ISU lost the TOP battle: 42:12-17:48, but was only outgained by 9 yards, 497-488. Kansas State ran 102 plays; Iowa State 48. That’s right, Iowa State averaged 10 yards a play, aided by TDs of 82, 79, 77, 71, and 60 yards. That’s 379 yards on 5 plays, leaving 109 yards on the other 43. It was just one of the most bonkers games I can recall.

MNW: It was so damn beautiful. More people oughta know about it:

I felt good for Ryan Silverfield—a guy for whom Memphis has been the only real head coaching gig, someone who coached instead of playing in college—finally having a quasi-breakthrough in 2023 after a couple 3-5 AAC campaigns. The Tigers scored 35+ in all their wins save a 28-24 victory over Navy, lost to Mizzou by seven, and were held to their lowest point total—21—by Tulane. Otherwise it’s shootout city, putting the ball in the hands of QB Seth Henigan, who will probably toss a pick or two and kick in a few touchdowns for good measure.

Let’s hope this one becomes a good ol’ shootout—Cyclones grinding it out with Sama and the occasional Rocco BechtBomb, Tigers taking approximately 30 seconds to score with a big play.

Also! Memphis should go Full Zubaz with their uniforms: my column

#9 Missouri Tigers vs. #7 Ohio State Buckeyes

Cotton Bowl: AT&T Stadium (Arlington, TX)
7pm | ESPN | OSU -3.5 | O/U 48.5

Kind of...: No bowl history here. OSU leads the all-time series 10-1-1, with only three of the meetings occurring in the last 75 years. Would it surprise you to know that Missouri will be making its 36 bowl appearance? That’s as many as Iowa and more than Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, and Michigan State, among others.

Obviously Ohio State has more (this year is their 55th appearance).

MNW: Yeah hey, we never previewed this game officially!

That’s alright, though, because it’s hard to get excited for something that, at best, ends with happy Missouri fans. I am impressed, though, at Mizzou’s 2023 non-conference—South Dakota State, MTSU, Kansas State, and a neutral-ish-site game (the old St. Louis Rams dome) against Memphis. That’s Good, Actually. They only lost to LSU and Georgia, Brady Cook is a fun QB who silenced some critics this year, and Elijah Drinkwitz is a pissy man-child who Beez hates or loves. I can never remember which. But visors look dumb.

Also, they have a fat kicker, and at OTE we celebrate the beefy kicker—shoutout to Harrison Mevis, who walked off K-State with this 61-yard field and wins our 2023 Joey Julius-Rafa Gaglianone Award for Kicking Beeftankery:

OK, just one more video:

Ohio State fans obviously watch this to see if they enter full panic mode for 2024—as much as “oh noes, we might go 10-2” can constitute panic if this five-star QB doesn’t pan out—and without Marvin Harrison Jr., who didn’t practice the other day, it once again falls on the already-burdened shoulders of some other five-star wide receivers.

Man, this preview thing is tough.

If TreVeyon Henderson doesn’t go at RB for the Buckeyes—we don’t know if he’ll play, but you’ll be happy to know that unsolicited he gave all his worries to God—without backup Chip Trayanum it’s Dallan Hayden running the ball. Hayden, in addition to looking like he’s 28 despite being just 20, is—GASP!—only a four-star recruit.

See, rest of the Big Ten? Everyone’s making sacrifices in this economy.

Randomly Selected Other Sports

Just kidding—nothing random about this. It’s only shit MNW is interested in. But you should be, too! I have excellent taste.

College Basketball

  • Detroit Mercy Titans at IUPUI Jaguars [11am, ESPN+]: Kenpom #339 travels to #359! There are 362 teams in college basketball! Someone’s 0 has to go in the Horizon League! I cannot wait.
  • Wright State Raiders at Green Bay Phoenix [12pm, ESPN+]
  • Radford Highlanders at #18 Clemson Tigers [6pm, ACCNX]
  • McNeese Cowboys at Michigan Wolverines [6pm, BTN]
  • Maine Black Bears at Minnesota Golden Gophers [6pm, Peacock]
  • St. Thomas Tommies at North Dakota Fighting Hawks [7pm, CBSSN]: Why is this on CBSSN? Shut up and be captivated by two of the whitest rosters you’ll see on a basketball court this year.
  • Jackson State Tigers at Northwestern Wildcats [7pm, Peacock]:
  • Fairly Dickin’, Son at #11 Illinois Fighting Illini [8pm, BTN]
  • San Diego State Aztecs at #13 Gonzaga Bulldogs [8pm, ESPN2]

Soccer

In case it needed to be said, I only grab things off mainstream streaming platforms for these—while you should watch the Kerala Blasters of the Indian Pro League on Onefootball, I’m not going to waste my time telling you to...oh god that’s what I’m doing, isn’t it

Serie A

  • Napoli vs. Monza [11:30am, CBSSN]
  • Fiorentina vs. Torino [11:30am, Paramount+]
  • Genoa vs. Inter Milan [1:45pm, CBSSN]
  • Lazio vs. Frosinone [1:45pm, Paramount+]

EFL Championship

  • Southampton vs. Plymouth Argyle [12pm, ESPN+]
  • Coventry City vs. Swansea City [1:45pm, ESPN+]
  • West Bromwich Albion vs. Leeds United [2:15pm, ESPN+]: Hey, remember when SBNation was trying to cover a whole lot of sports and there were team-specific sites for a whole bunch of random EFL teams? Leeds had one, Reading had one...even Bolton Wanderers had one, and then they went totally bankrupt!

I’m talking about Bolton, by the way, not SBNation.

Anywho, if anyone knows a place on SBN I can get Minnesota Wild coverage, lemme kno—

Here’s your open thread for the day’s sports. There will likely be a college basketball thread at some point, too! Go nuts, behave, and above all thanks for reading OTE.
