ReliaQuest Bowl preview

The lack of Bloomin’ Onions is likely not going to be the only disappointment

Bowl sponsors come and bowl sponsors go, but coconut shrimp is forever

What: ReliaQuest (f/k/a Outback) Bowl

Who: Wisconsin vs. LSU

When: 11:00 am, New Year’s Day

Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa

Why: It just means more...unless the SEC loses (which they won’t)

Line: LSU -10, o/u: 56

I’m writing this while watching Mississippi pretty much shred PSU’s vaunted defense, so I’m not feeling a lot of optimism for UW in this B1G/SEC matchup. And, frankly, I’m an idiot for buying into this presentation. Michigan could be beat ‘Bama by 50 and it won’t change the frame. So, let’s scrap that.

UW has had a fair number of opt-outs (most importantly, Braelon Allen), but not as many as LSU, which includes the Heisman Trophy winner. That the Tigers are still favored by 10 tells you how big of a mismatch this is one paper. Vegas seems to expect a 33-23 LSU victory, which works in some ways. In Wisconsin’s 7 wins, they never scored fewer than 24 points. In their 5 losses, they never scored more than 22.

That said, I have no idea where the 23 points are coming from unless the defense produces a TD, AND Tanner Mordecai balls out. Maybe UW will look vastly improved with all the time off, but CFB isn’t a morality play, and, despite his odiousness, Brian Kelly is a good coach with a talented roster. LSU went 9-3, the three teams they lost to went 35-3 this year, and LSU let at some point in the second half of all three losses.

Who knows, but there’s a difference between hope and optimism, and this is more of a “hope” game for Badger fans.
