Woof Iowa woof

#29 Illinois Fighting Illini (7-1) (+7.5) at #9 Tennessee Volunteers (5-3), 11 am, CBS

MaximumSam: The Vols are positively part of the group right now, having gone to Wiscy and winning and then losing a tight match with Purdue. They’ve also dropped games to North Carolina and Kanas - no shame in that. Dalton Knecht has emerged as a big time scorer - he dropped 37 on the Tar Heels. Other than that, you know the drill - defend, defend, defend, and maybe put the ball in the basket. Might be a tough matchup for the perimeter challenged Illini. Torvik goes Vols, 75-68.

#217 Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (3-7) at #104 Minnesota Golden Gophers (6.3) (-9.5), 11 am, BTN

MaximumSam: Having split their first two B1G games, the Gophs have four buy games in a row. Get those wins, coach. Torvik goes Gophers, 76-66.

#10 Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2) v. #1 Purdue Boilermakers (8-1) (-6.5), 12:30 pm, FOX

MaximumSam: Here come the Tide, ready to shoot threes and get rebounds and get to the line. They are among the nation’s leaders in all those things, though they are still piecing their defense together from last year’s monster. They are 1-2 against top 50 type competition, and we saw them earlier losing to Ohio State. This game is part of the Hall of Fame Series in Toronto - awfully far north for the Tide. Torvik goes Purdue, 83-77.

#15 Auburn Tigers (5-2) v. #53 Indiana Hoosiers (7-1) (+6.5), 1 pm, ESPN2

MaximumSam: Bruce Pearl’s Tigers have been a bit quiet and are coming off a smarting loss to Appy State. Big man Johni Broome leads the team in points, rebounds, and blocks, while Five Star Freshman Aden Holloway shoots from deep. They have been very good defensively and very bad from the perimeter - sort of a rich man’s Indiana. Expect bricks. Torvik goes Auburn, 74-70.

#22 Wisconsin Badgers (7-2) (+9.5) at #5 Arizona Wildcats (7-0), 2:15 pm, ESPN

MaximumSam: The hard charging Badgers get their biggest test yet in a season full of tests. Arizona is relentless on the the glass, can shoot from everywhere, and they play defense. Still, they are getting a lot of cache from wins over Duke and Sparty, teams that are a combined 9-7. They are #1 in the AP Poll, which only makes them ripe for the Greg Gard picking. Torvik goes Arizona, 76-69.

#26 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-1, 1-0) at #129 Penn State Nittany Lions (4-5, 0-1) (+5.5), 5 pm, BTN

MaximumSam: The sole B1G conference game could be interesting. Ohio State has been good, but hasn’t played a road game yet, and Penn State is desperate for a win after dropping an overtime, uh, thriller against Maryland. OSU’s offense is good as always, but their defense has ticked up a bit, largely based on Felix Okpara throwing weak stuff into the third row. He matches up with Qudus Wahab, who doesn’t do weak stuff. Torvik goes Buckeyes, 77-71.

#74 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-3) (+3.5) at #76 Seton Hall Pirates (5-3), 7:30 pm, FS1

MaximumSam: Rutgers has been hot on the recruiting trail, but the games, woof. They’ve been hammered twice in a row by Illinois and Wake Forest, and now go on the road. The Pirates have been pretty good against bad teams and pretty bad against good teams - I guess we’ll see where Rutgers lands on that list. Torvik goes Seton Hall, 65-62.
