Michigan State Spartans 73, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 55

MaximumSam: This one was nip and tuck for a while, and then Michigan State went on a 19-0 run in the second half. Might as well been a fifty point run for the struggles Rutgers has scoring.

Maryland Terrapins 76, Illinois Fighting Illini 67

MaximumSam: Well, then. We knew Illinois would hit some struggles without Terrence Shannon, and losing to Maryland at home is the Webster definition of “struggle.” The Illini got 26 from Marcus Domask, but everyone else was pretty limited. For Maryland’s part, Jahmir Young and Julian Reese combined for 48 and the team held Illinois to a dismal eFG of 37.5%. With the loss, every team in the conference is at least two games back of Wisconsin. Please, we cannot let this happen again.

#28 Ohio State Buckeyes (12-4, 2-3) at #73 Michigan Wolverines (6-10, 1-4) (+1.5), 11 am, FOX

MaximumSam: Michigan gets a home game, which means point guard Dug McDaniel can play? I think that’s what is happening. With or without him, Michigan is on a five game losing streak and Juwan Howard could use a win. Ohio State has been in a rut, too, the proverbial Holtmann January. The calendar tells me it is still January, so Buckeyes beware. Roddy Gayle has had three straight rough outings after a great game against West Virginia. Let’s see who is least bad. Torvik goes OSU, 77-75.

#58 Iowa Hawkeyes (10-6, 2-3) at #93 Minnesota Golden Gophers (12-4, 3-2) (-1.5), 5 pm, BTN

MaximumSam: Speaking of ruts, Iowa is not in one. They looked great in their last two home games, and now we can see if that will translate on the road. The Crocodile Hunter heads up north to Minnesota, where there is a balmy high of -2 today. The Gophers got clonked in their last outing at Indiana, but this is a winnable game - we’ll see if they can get in the way of Iowa’s offense. Torvik goes Minny, 81-80.
