Recaps

Purdue Boilermakers 83, Illinois Fighting Illini 78

BoilerUp89: Purdue built a 21 point lead in the second half but Illinois was able to chip away at it and cut it down to 3 with nine seconds to go. Two Braden Smith free throws were followed by a missed Illini shot and the Boilermakers pulled out the victory. Zach Edey had limited minutes due to foul trouble, but nevertheless now has over 1000 career rebounds. Trey Kaufman-Renn had the best game of his career with 23 points and 4 rebounds while provided big minutes with Edey on the bench. The Illini were led by Marcus Domask’s 26 points as the senior guard played all 40 minutes. Ty Rodgers had a rough game as Matt Painter stuck Edey on the guard and dared him to shoot the basketball.

Previews

#91 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-5, 0-2) at #70 Iowa Hawkeyes (8-6, 0-3) (-7.5), 11 am, BTN

BoilerUp89: Both teams need some answers soon if they have any hope of turning their season around.

MaximumSam: Rutgers showed some signs of life offensively against Ohio State, and now head to Iowa to face the Frantastic Iowa defense (note: Frantastic is not good). Iowa has struggled greatly against teams with a pulse, though saying Rutgers has a pulse may be optimistic. Torvik goes Hawkeyes, 76-71.

#47 Nebraska Cornhuskers (12-2, 2-1) at #21 Wisconsin Badgers (10-3, 2-0) (-6.5), 1:15 pm, BTN

BoilerUp89: The last of the undefeated in conference play teams hosts a red hot Nebraska squad coming off a convincing victory over Indiana. Nebraska mostly held their own against Indiana’s talented post players, but will continue to be challenged there against a quality Wisconsin front court.

MaximumSam: We are still adjusting to a world where playing Nebraska is a rough day, so bear with us. Wiscy has been dominant lately outside of that blowout loss to Arizona; the one area they haven’t been great at is three point defense. Nebraska as a team hasn’t shot the ball all that well, but Keisei the Blade dropped 28 against Indiana and probably needs something like that today. Torvik says Badgers, 77-69.

#20 Ohio State Buckeyes (12-2, 2-1) at #102 Indiana Hoosiers (10-4, 2-1) (+1.5), 7 pm, FOX

BoilerUp89: The Hoosiers will look to bounce back at home against the Buckeyes. To pull off the upset, Indiana needs to run Ohio State’s shooters off the three point line and force them to settle for two point jump shots. On the other end of the court, Ware and Reneau should be able to bully their way around the rim.

MaximumSam: Mike Woodson called out his guards after getting eviscerated by Nebraska, and I would expect they come out with a chip on their shoulder. Indiana’s defense has really fallen off, mostly because they aren’t guarding the three point line very well. Ohio State would love that, and Jamison Battle has really flowered in his transition from playmaker at Minny to spot up shooter at OSU. He’s shooting 45% from behind the arc - Indiana had better guard him. Torvik goes Buckeyes, 77-72.
